Edward J. Correia (RISP, Ret.), a resident of Warwick, RI, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2023. He was born on June 23, 1935, in Providence, to the late Henry and Sarah (Cornell) Correia, and raised in Warren with his sisters and brothers; Barbara (Correia) Fitting and Robert Correia and the late Mary (Correia) Oliver, Henry Correia, and Frances Correia. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia (Miller) Correia in 2021, after 61 years of marriage. Their chance meeting happened when Trooper Correia pulled Pat over for speeding on the way to the beach. He disregarded her sassy attitude that day, but learned to appreciate it over the next six decades.
Upon high school graduation, Ed entered the Army. He was assigned to the Panama Canal zone as a military police officer. He was honorably discharged and then entered the Rhode Island State Police training academy. As a trooper, standing 5’8”, his fellow troopers often said “he carried himself as though he was six feet tall!” Ed proudly served the state in many capacities, ending his career as the Commanding Officer of the Intelligence Bureau. Upon his retirement after 20 years as a Detective Lieutenant, Ed worked in the Loss Prevention division of the United Parcel Service.
For anyone who knew Ed, they knew his passion for baseball. He played in high school and continued playing well into his seventies! Attending high school and American Legion games, Ed could always be found at the baseball fields with a Dunkin Donuts coffee in hand. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, who all proudly wore the number 11, Ed’s badge number. During the summers, he spent his time with family at Buttonwoods Campgrounds where they made many fond memories throughout the years - from playing wiffle ball with his grandkids to participating in the annual Labor Day races.
Ed is survived by his three children: Michael Correia (BPD) and wife Kim, Pamela Dwyer and husband Thomas, and Lynn Gehr and husband Paul; as well as his grandchildren: Cameron Correia and wife Danielle, Shane Correia (WFD) and wife Hannah, Ted Dwyer, Casey Correia (PPD), Sam Dwyer, Hilde Gehr, Jane Dwyer, and Emma Gehr, as well as his great-grandson Bodhi Correia.
Ed’s family was so grateful to his caregivers at Avalon Nursing home who provided him the care and comfort he needed, as well as a bottomless cup of coffee.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 7th from 4-7 pm at the Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, Warwick.
