Albert Laurier Bernier, 95 Waterville - Albert Laurier Bernier, passed away on December 3, 2017 at age 95. He was born in Waterville, Maine on August 21, 1922. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley Anne Bernier. He is survived by his children and their spouses Michelle and Roger Hatch of Littleton, Mass.; Maureen and George Jakubson of Ithaca, New York; David Bernier and Karen Unger of Waterville; Maryanne Bernier of Waterville; Meg and Greg Boyd of Waterville; Paul and Elaine Bernier of Upton Mass.; and Daniel and Jennifer Bernier of Waterville; 17 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and his nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters Fernand Bernier of Waterville and Alice Lander of Portland. Albert began his college career at Colby College in 1941, but delayed finishing when he joined the Navy in October 1942, serving as a Quartermaster in the Pacific on USS PC 555 until March of 1946. He graduated from Colby College in the class of 1950. He married Shirley Fellows on December 31, 1949, a marriage lasting 67 years until her death in November 2016. He graduated from Yale Law School in the class of 1953, and returned to Waterville, Maine to practice law. He joined the firm Dubord, Dubord and Bernier in 1953 which became Marden, Dubord, Bernier, Chandler and Stevens. At a political level he was in succession a common councilman, a member of the state house of representatives, city solicitor, and then mayor of Waterville. In civic affairs he was chairman of the Sacred Heart Board of Trustees, the Colburn Classical Board of Trustees, the Board of Library Trustees, Mid-Maine Medical Center Board of Directors, and was a member of the Maine Council of Humanities, and a long term Director of Kennebec Federal Savings. Albert was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish in Waterville, Maine where he served as an altar boy, met his wife, stood in for a groom away in military service, and later as a lector. His home and summer home were the center of frequent family gatherings. His children and grandchildren share golden memories of camping, canoeing, cross-country skiing, backpacking the Appalachian Trail, mountain climbing and enjoying the bountiful produce from his garden. Visiting Hours will take place at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street in Waterville on Friday, December 8th from 4:00 to 6:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 72 Pleasant Street, Waterville on Saturday, December 9th at 11:00 and followed by interment at Saint Francis Catholic Cemetery, 78 Grove Street, Waterville.
