Larry Amborski, age 90 of Wayland, passed away peacefully at Alamo Cove Tuesday, March 18, 2025. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Hannah; parents Mike and Rose Amborski; siblings Margaret Kiel, Eleanor Parmer, and Dorothy Cremeans. He is survived by daughters Terry (Mike) Davis, Andrea (Robert) VandenBerg; seven grandchildren Rashell (Nicole) Bowerman, Tanya (Quinn) Perry, Benjamin Davis, Matthew (Stephanie) Davis, Chet (Jess) VandenBerg, Casey (Jenna) VandenBerg, Carly (Ben) Schipper; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews Mary Lou Belka, Louise Kiel, Janice (Floyd) Ertle, Gary and Denny Cremeans; extended family and friends.
Larry was born in Hilliards, Michigan, the youngest of four children. He worked on the family farm and helped neighboring farmers. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball, bingo, and riding his bike; in high school, he was a member of the baseball team and Future Farmers of America. He attended St. Stanislaus School and then Hopkins High School. Larry was an altar boy through high school and helped younger ones learn the Latin prayers.
Upon graduating, he entered the Air Force and served four years. He met his future wife in England, and they married in 1956. A daughter was born there and the family then returned to the States. They made their home in Hilliards before moving to Wayland, where they would spend the next 60 years. Larry worked at Spartan Stores for 30+ years, delivered mail, and drove school bus part-time. He also drove cars for local dealers and was a courier for City Transfer Co. He continued on the athletic fields, playing, umpiring, and coaching softball. He enjoyed golf, and if he wasn’t playing well, he’d start looking for golf balls. That became a hobby, and he would collect, sell, or give golf balls away to whoever wanted them. Larry and his wife regularly played cards, and you always wanted Larry as a euchre partner, because he won. The pool table in the basement also got plenty of use.
Larry’s generosity was abundant. He would share vegetables from his garden, rake leaves, shovel snow, and help family, friends, and neighbors whenever they needed it.
Friends may visit with Larry’s family from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2 at St. Therese Church, 128 Cedar St., Wayland, MI 49348. The Rosary will follow at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 3 at St. Therese Church, with visitation from 9:00-9:45 a.m. prior to the Mass. A luncheon will follow in the school hall, and anyone wishing to accompany the family to Elmwood Cemetery for the Committal Service is welcome.
A special thank you to the staff at Alamo Cove Nursing Home for their loving care and support of Larry during his stay. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Therese Church or School.
