Bettye Margaret Gemmill, 99, longtime resident of Midland, Texas, passed away peacefully in Webster, Texas, on May 13, 2022. Bettye was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1923, to Hugh D. and Mary Ethel. She grew up in Fort Worth with three brothers, Jack, Doug, and David, and a sister, Edie, and graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1941. Her artistic talent was evident at a young age and many of her high school classmates remarked on her sweetness. From her first marriage, she had her cherished daughter, Lynda, in 1942. Bettye worked in Fort Worth as a secretary and assistant at Cities Service Oil Company in the 1950s, where she met the love of her life, Edward J. Gemmill. They married there in 1954 and moved with Lynda to Midland, Texas, in 1957, where she soon had three sons in exactly three years time. She spent most of her life there, with a brief two-year stint in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in the late sixties. She spent the last six years of her life at Brookdale Senior Independent Living in Webster, Texas. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She loved raising her family and was skilled at the art of friendship. She enjoyed drawing, painting, art, music, reading, travel, and flowers and was involved in various community and church activities throughout her life. She was especially fond of the twenty years of summer vacations she spent with her family on a private ranch in southwest Colorado, where she would sometimes oil paint and often cooked freshly-caught trout on a cast iron skillet. Bettye was kind, sweet, loving, and graceful; she touched the hearts of many.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Gemmill, son, Gregory Gemmill, daughter Lynda Thomas Keller, and brothers Jack and Doug.
Bettye is survived by her older sister Edie and younger brother David, two sons, Richard and Tim, five grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
