At nine months pregnant, his mother traveled across the country so he could begin his life as a Texan. On November 11, 1950, Bruce Howard was born in the small town of Lufkin. The first of four children, Bruce grew up in the country surrounded by family and community where he learned to love family and enjoy being outside - hunting, fishing, and exploring. Bruce also developed a lifelong passion for guns and knife-making which continued throughout his life.
Early in his life, around the age of 13, Bruce came to know Jesus and accepted Him as Savior. This relationship grew and developed into the great passion of his life. Through the years, he participated in many opportunities for mission work. He studied the Bible for his own growth and to be an evangelist and teacher of Jesus and His Love. At the age of 71, while his eyes were no longer willing to focus on reading, he learned how to use streaming media to continue being spiritually filled. Bruce used this new source of ministry to continue his love of studying scripture and biblical history. If love is defined as "willing the good of others," Bruce loved widely and deeply, often sacrificing his time and resources for others, including family and complete strangers. His is a life full of faith while clinging to the forgiveness of his Savior. Instilling the importance of following Jesus is a legacy that will continue in everyone who knew Bruce.
Throughout Bruce's medical journey, he was always so grateful to everyone who helped him and often expressed this gratitude at length when he was able. Bruce enjoyed visiting and getting to know others. And as much as he joked that the only words he got to say were "Yes, Dear", he would spend hours talking your ear off about a variety of different subjects.
Bruce is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Debbie Kimbrough; his son, Jacob; daughter, Kristen Brodie; grandson, Micah Brodie and his wife Autumn; great-granddaughter, Lilly; granddaughter, Emma Brodie; his siblings: David and his wife Julie; Wynne and his wife Vickie; Angela and her husband Scott; and numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles, and several close friends.
The hole in our hearts and lives is substantial. However, we know with certainty that God is good and faithful and that Bruce is delighting in the presence of our God: the All-Consuming Fire of Divine Love.
A visitation for Bruce will be held Friday, October 6, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a committal service.
