Emma G. Ramirez, 94, of Houston, TX, passed away September 18. She was born in Mission, TX on August 15, 1931 to Doroteo Gonzalez and Maria Garza Gonzalez. She was married to Francisco Xavier Ramirez for 64 years.
Emma was a strong and fearless woman who always did what she felt was right and necessary, no matter the challenge. Born during the Great Depression, she only received an elementary school education, something she regretted deeply. Determined that her children and future generations would have better opportunities, she always stressed the importance of going to school and learning. Her husband worked his full-time job and she helped him clean offices at night, all in an effort to pay for the private Catholic education of their children through both elementary and high school. Later, Emma established and operated her own ceramic shop, which she managed until she decided to devote her time to caring for her grandchildren. She also brought in additional income for her family working as a seamstress. Throughout her life, she did everything possible to both support and encourage her children and grandchildren to continue on to higher education.
As a young woman, following the death of her father, Emma took on the responsibility of arranging for her mother and siblings to return to the United States after her father had moved the family to Reynosa, Tamaulipas, in hopes of escaping the hardships of the Great Depression. It was hard in those early days, as she and her siblings worked the fields as migrant workers to make ends meet. Despite these hardships, Emma knew life would ultimately be better in the United States for everyone she cared for—so the sacrifice was worth it. Emma had a great love and respect for her country and supported everything American.
Emma is preceded in death by her husband, one brother, and three sisters. She is survived by her children: Xavier, Gladys, Claudell and Monica; her grandchildren: Megan, Mikaela, Noel, Joel, Thomas, David (Frankie), Emma, and Maryann; and her great grandchildren: William, Heidi, and Emerson. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Irene G. Martinez, and many nieces and nephews. All of whom she loved deeply.
