Gladys Newberry (Springer) was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on December 16, 1925, and passed away on August 28, 2025, just a few months shy of her 100th birthday. She lived a long and full life. Gladys grew up on a Midwest farm during the Great Depression and worked in a factory as part of the WWII war effort. She met her husband (Norman Newberry) at a USO dance where her brother was playing in the band. Shortly after their marriage in 1946, the couple moved to Norman’s hometown of Houston, Texas, to raise a family. Gladys and Norman were married until his death in 2008.
Gladys enjoyed learning new things and continued to evolve throughout her life. She was a gifted artist who took up oil painting in her fifties. She won awards for her work and has a painting currently on display in a Van Wert, Ohio museum. Gladys loved to travel and visited many foreign countries. In her sixties, she and Norman hiked the Milford Track in New Zealand as the oldest couple in their group. In her late nineties, Gladys enjoyed using her iPad to follow the news and “snoop” on her family.
Gladys is survived by her three children, Norman Newberry (Becky), Mark Newberry, and Kaye Newberry (Steve Crow); three grandchildren, Jennifer Moats (John), Laura Watral (Edward), and Steven Newberry; and four great grandchildren; Jake Moats, Jamie Moats, Chase Watral, and Haylee Watral.
Gladys was much loved, and she will be dearly missed.
