A loving wife and mother of six children, Gloria was born on March 11, 1934 in the beautiful city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico to the late Isidro and Concepcion (Guerrero) Castro. She spent her childhood in the northern part of Mexico, where she attended school with her three brothers, Manuel, Raul, and Arturo and younger sister, Angela. Gloria was married to Mr. Roberto Olveda on December 30, 1970 in Monterrey, Mexico. Always a sharp dresser, she was drawn to fashion and excelled in retail sales and marketing, eventually starting her own clothing business. In June of 1975, Gloria and her husband immigrated to the United States, establishing residency in Houston and the surrounding area. Working for Houston ISD, she enjoyed spending time with children, many of whom looked up to her like a second mom. She later served as a supporting staff member with the University of Houston, retiring after several years.
Doña Gloria, as she was affectionately called, lived a fun-filled life. Family vacations were always important to her and she was very proud of her children. She had many hobbies, including bingo, cross-stitching and gardening and loved spending time planning out her garden each year. A talented cook, she created many delicious meals, with her sopa de albondigas and pastel de carne becoming family favorites. Traveling and taking cruises were among her most loved activities. She particularly enjoyed Thailand and Spain, and delighted in taking pictures and acquiring mementos from the places she visited. Las Vegas was also a favorite destination, where she relished in the excitement of the slot machines. She adored Frank Sinatra, Luis Miguel and Andrea Bocelli, receiving much pleasure from their music.
During her recent years of declining health, Gloria endured illness with great fortitude. When confronted with obstacles, she was a warrior and yet managed to maintain a great sense of humor with her quick wit and infectious smile. She was a true example of courage, strength and dignity to her beloved family.
Gloria was preceded in death by her loving son, J. Adrian Galan M.D. Survivors include her husband, Roberto Olveda of the home; three sons, Carlos (Malena) Galan, Miguel (Lydia) Galan, and Robert (Amy) Olveda Jr; two daughters, Silvia Galan and C. Gina Galan; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her family's beloved pets, Chiquita and Rosie. All will miss her and keep her in their hearts.
The family would like to thank the devoted nursing staff at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital for their dedication and loving care of Gloria.
