Orphaned at the age of 9, she was left to live with her aunt as a nanny in California.
By the age of 15 she worked as a hat maker.
At age 18 she moved back to Mexico to live with her grandparents where she met her husband-to-be, Alfonso Tamez Salazar.
They moved to Texas where she became a nurse.
They created a solid family out of many children through adoption. They adopted 5 children; their first child, Gee, was adopted in 1943.
Their 2nd child, Jennie JoAnn, was adopted in 1956.
Roy, their 3rd child was adopted in 1959.
Mary Helen and the late John Alfonso, their 4th and 5th children were adopted in 1963.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and dedicated grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was a woman who gave all of herself no matter the task, willingly and unselfishly.
She taught us to be strong, patient, and independent just like she was.
She was a gift sent straight from heaven; given to us from God above.
We didn't know how much she would teach us about the meaning of true love.
True love sometimes means letting go of someone precious and dear; that is what we are now forced to do. Although, we wanted to keep her here.
She loved beyond all telling. She will be missed with a grief beyond all tears.
To the world she was just one. To us she was the world.
She is preceded in death by her husband Alfonso Tamez Salazar, her son, John Alfonso Salazar,
her son-in-law Antonio Lopez and her granddaughter, Laura Michelle Lopez.
She is survived by her daughters Gee Lopez, Jennie JoAnn Salazar, and Mary Salazar, and her son Roy Salazar.
Grandchildren, Anthony Lopez, Erick Lopez, Lisa Ferreira, Gilbert Salazar, Carmen Evans, Fernando Ferreira, Albert Garza, Roy Salazar Jr., and Sonia Salazar.
Also by 6 great-granddaughters, Emily Lopez, Ashley Lopez, Layla Salazar, Analise Evans, Aryana Becker, and Amaris Ferreira.
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
