She was the youngest sibling of six. She was inspired by her grandmother, Ruth Love lovingly
called “Mama Dear”. She accepted Christ at a young age and baptized at Wesley United
Methodist Church in Greenwood, MS. She later became a member of Faith United Methodist
Church in Dickinson, TX where she served faithfully until the Lord called her home on
Thursday, May 23, 2024.
After graduating from Greenwood High School, Karen started her collegiate studies at
Tougaloo College, in 1989 she was initiated into the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She obtained her BA degree at Mississippi Valley State University.
Karen’s professional career began with the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services
where she worked for 3 years. She later moved to Texas, where she obtained an MA degree
from North Texas University and enrolled in the doctoral program at Virginia Tech. There she
worked for the state of Texas Department of Rehabilitation Services for 5 years before joining
the Veterans Department of Rehabilitation where she retired after 10 years of valuable service.
She was a diligent member of the Gamma Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc. She embodied the sorority’s mission, “Service to All Mankind.”
On March 14, 1995, Karen was joined in holy matrimony to Edmund Jones. This love story
would span 29 years. To this union three children were raised.
She leaves to celebrate her home going, her loving and devoted husband, Edmund Jones; her
sons, Yawncey (Christy) McDowell, Jonathan McDowell, and Jamarcus Martin, all of Dickinson
TX. Her granddaughter Arya McDowell. Her siblings Darrell (Ellen) McDowell, of Seaside, CA,
Reginald (Helen) McDowell, of Memphis, TN, and Johnetta Red, of Jackson MS. Her sisters,
Althea McDowell and Alfreda McDowell preceded her in death. Her nieces, Tiffany McDowell,
Ivy Red, and Sharrell McDowell, her nephews, Brian Hudson, Justin Elliott, Roderick Red, Jordan
Red, Harrell McDowell, and Darrell McDowell and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, in-laws and
friends.
SHE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED BY THOSE THAT KNEW HER AND LOVED HER.
A visitation for Karen will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Faith United Methodist Church, 2205 Avenue G, Dickinson, TX 77539. A funeral service will occur Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, 2205 Avenue G, Dickinson, TX 77539. A graveside service will occur Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Fwy, Webster, TX 77598.
