Kenneth Hugh Ramsey, 84, passed on to his Heavenly rewards on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020.
He died peacefully, in his sleep, in Friendswood, Texas.
Ken was born deep in the piney woods of East Texas, in Panola County on March 23, 1936, to Elza and Elsie Ramsey.
Comments from friends, family, co-workers and those who volunteered with him at church have flooded social media. The reoccurring theme has been, ‘what a joy he was to be around; he always had such a winning smile and a joyful attitude.’
He accepted Jesus as his Savior as a youth and truly sought to follow The Lord all of his days.
He attended schools in Gary, Texas, Crowley, Louisiana, Palestine, Carthage, Texas, and graduated from Katy High School, Katy, Texas, in 1954.
Ken served four years in the U.S. Air Force where he learned about computers. During that time he met his wife, Loretta Henry, from Merkel, Texas. They were married for 62 years.
Ken was hired by General Electric shortly after leaving the Air Force. He continued his work on computers - ones that filled a whole room. He worked at Thule Air Base, Greenland, Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and eventually landed at NASA in Houston. He and Loretta bought a home in League City, Texas where they lived for over 50 years. He was involved with the space shuttle for several years before retiring from work at NASA. He was called back after retirement to help, as they needed his expertise.
Upon his initial retirement, colleagues designed a t-shirt with his face on the front and the Top Ten Ken Quotes on the back. Two of them were ‘Really? Right here in River City?’ and ‘You’re a fine feller, I don’t care what they say.’
Ken and Loretta joined First Baptist Church in League City (later renamed Bay Area Baptist) and immediately immersed themselves in the work there. Loretta was in the choir and helped in many children's programs. Ken served as a deacon for many years while getting his hands dirty on keeping the buses running. Those buses were used to bring many people - especially children - to church and to Vacation Bible School. Ken was also involved in the outreach programs that touched the community to let people know of a God who loves them so.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta Ramsey; his son, Scott Ramsey of Katy, his daughter, Kim Whynot of Pearland, five grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter (Caroline Weiss). His grandchildren include Britni Weiss, Preston Ramsey, Benjamin Ramsey, Sydney Whynot, and Olivia Whynot and two brothers, John Ramsey and LeRoy Ramsey.
