Richard T. Doane, 86, passed away on June 29th, 2023 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his wife of forty years, Mary Pace Doane. He is survived by his Daughter Sonya Doane Tatum (Larry) of Dacula, Georgia; Daughter Sherry Lynn Doane of West Monroe, Louisiana.
He is also survived by: Brother-in-law Richard Calvert; Niece Karen Calvert; Nephew Toby Calvert (Emma) from San Antonio, Texas; Great nieces Lilly Calvert and Rita Calvert. Richard also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Chico and Baubles.
Dick Doane was born in Evanston, Illinois. His mother passed early in his childhood. He was raised in Wilmette, Illinois where his father built the corporation of Magnaflux. When he was six years old, his father, stepmother Sandy Turk and sister Peggy Calvert moved to a sprawling ranch in Bandera, Texas where they lived the true Texas ranch lifestyle.
In middle school and high school, Richard attended St. Mark’s School in Massachusetts, Culver Military Academy in Illinois and Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas, followed by four years in the United States Navy. After serving in the Navy, Richard became a Texas stockbroker. It was then that he met and married the mother of his two children, Regina Bell Harper. They moved to Monroe, Louisiana to be near her family and were married for six years. Richard then relocated to Houston, Texas desiring to be in between his San Antonio family and his children in Louisiana. Throughout his lifetime, Richard continued to show love and devotion to his children through constant attention and countless visits.
In the seventies, Richard began his life career as the owner of two art and frame galleries, A-Plus Framing and Doane Galleries, both near the Galleria in Houston, Texas. Having come from a family of accomplished artists, it was natural life path. At the corner of Westheimer and Voss, a location then known as the busiest intersection in the South, he served an endless array of clients for the next 30 years, including numerous celebrities, sports figures, university presidents, CEO’s, well-known musicians and physicians.
It was a client, Dr. Petti Wagner, heir to Palmolive, who introduced Dick to his lovely wife, Mary Penna Pace. They became residents at the Bays Oaks Community for 30 years until Mary’s death in May of 2020. They were faithful members at Faith Assembly of God in Pasadena, Texas, for forty years where Richard served as a greeter and usher. After Mary’s passing, Richard spent the last year of his life in Georgia near his daughter, Sonya.
Richard had an uncanny memory regarding historical dates and events. His love of Mexican food was unequaled. Full of energy and quick wit, Dick never met a stranger. His gift of gab, and extremely personable demeanor was unparalleled. He was a natural greeter, serving at both Faith Assembly of God in Pasadena, Texas and more recently at North Metro Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was a devoted Cowboys fan, enjoyed western music and movies and always had a joke or funny story to tell. He was loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that any donations be made in his honor to Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, Georgia or to your local animal shelter.
