He is survived by his very loving and darling wife, Sue Ellen Hellmers Bobo; their two loving children, Roy (Jocelynne) and Anne Nans (Clay); five wonderful grandkids: Caleb, Amy, Riley, and Seth Nans; and Sean Bobo; Sister Peggy Sue Bobo Bynum (Don), their sons Russell (Lisa) and Brad (Jessica) and their kids, Steven, Anna, and Chase. And by his loving step-mom, Sarah Shepard Bobo.
He grew up in bucolic Bellaire; all the way through school. Although he didn’t make the Bellaire Teenage baseball league he was Sports Editor of the yearbook, Carillon, at Bellaire HS; and proudly wore the tag, “the Armchair Athlete.”
Active in Scouting, he and his good buddy, Jay Walrath, worked hard to earn Order of the Arrow Ordeal And Brotherhood honors. He also earned the God and Country award at church. He earned the Life Scout award.
After living briefly in Buenos Aires and Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina, he began at Austin College in 1961; where he soon fell in love with Sue Ellen, the love and joy of his life.
He transferred to UT in their first National Championship season, 1963. He joined the APO chapter in working numerous campus service projects. APO also enjoyed socials once a month! He and his APO buddies carried the Texas flag onto the field at Memorial Stadium for the very first time! What a kick that was.
His marriage to Sue Ellen at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant on February 26, 1966, was the happiest day of his life!!
He served as a Line Officer aboard Navy destroyer, USS John R Craig (DD-885). His Officer duties included Electrical, Damage Control, DASH, and Legal Divisions. After two years he qualified as “Officer of the Deck for Fast Carrier Task Force Operations,” a very tough responsibility to achieve.
Upon his return from war he asked the LORD to forgive him for condoning the killing of fellow human beings. The LORD told Roy, “I do.” What a wonderful blessing in his life!!
Roy served in Personnel and Editor at Rohm & Haas, Training Supervisor with Dresser Industries Petroleum & Minerals Group, and in Executive Search with Marshall Lowe, Ward Howell, and RB Consulting.
He successfully recruited Management and Executive talent for Blocker/Global Marine/Dual/Huthnance Drilling Companies; BF Goodrich, and Hills Pet Products. His finest Search work was in recruiting Jimbo O’Neil and Wilson Yancey for budding start-up Quanta Services. Those two men helped build Quanta Services into an outstanding and very successful $6B business.
Roy really enjoyed working on and hosting his Bellaire class of 1960 Reunions every five years. He also helped organize bi-annual luncheons, which serve as fun Mini-Reunions. He organized his Men’s Lunch Bunch which is very much-enjoyed by some of his guy classmates throughout the year. Great camaraderie and tales of “the good ole days” (many of which are true).
Roy faithfully served the Church of God (Holiness Movement), Gulfhaven Seventh Day Adventist Church, and Church of God Seventh Day (Galena Park) as Sunday/Sabbath School Teacher, Elder, and Visitation leader. He was devoted to ministering to and caring for people; and to helping them mature in their personal devotion to the LORD Jesus, “LORD also of the Sabbath.”
Graveside service will be held Sunday, October 4th at 2:00PM at Forest Park East Cemetery located at 21620 Gulf Freeway Webster, Texas 77598.
