As the rolling hills of East Central Texas offer beauty and the proof of God’s Creation, so were we blessed and privileged to know and love one of our own, Ruth Patterson Cubley; daughter, wife, mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and Great-Great Grandmother. Ruth was born in the small town on a farm in Oglesby, Texas on January 20, 1922.
Growing up on the farm, Ruth learned many skills she would carry with her and would benefit her family through all her many years on this earth. Her family was fortunate during the depression era to have the animals, vegetables and means to allow the family to be self-sufficient and share with the community their good fortune. Ruth learned her wonderful cooking skills during this time assisting her Mom in helping feed folks in their fellowship community which were great numbers. She learned at an early age to be a server to others, her family, and the Lord.
Her greatest joy in life was her family. She always looked forward to all of the large gatherings that gave her the opportunity to be with all her wonderful family members and provide her with photographic memories she would look at over and over when she was unable to be with them. Vacationing at the Cubley’s Woodville weekend home provided so many years of fun, fish fries, games, swimming in the cold creek, many great outdoor fires, shopping, and just enjoying life. She loved to entertain her children with her beautiful singing and piano playing. Ruth enjoy the game of 42 and spend many, many memorable hours playing with family and friends. In her later years, 42 dominos and Bingo was a big part of her retirement past times. Even in her 90’s she still could hold her own at the game table and it would make her smile from ear to ear.
All who knew Ruth, were so lucky to indulge in her meals. It was a long time coming but always so worth the wait. Holiday meals were so treasured. She truly cooked with love and skill. The kids and grandchildren still speak of what meals they loved the most. She entered a local recipe and cooking contest and took 1st place for her Asparagus Casserole recipe which brought her great pride.
She cared for her disabled brother, Joe for years with great love and care just as she also did as well for all her family members.
She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church. Moving to Crosby in the late 1960’s, she found a church home at the Crosby Methodist Church.
Ruth was married to Thomas William Cubley, the love of her life for nearly 50 years, on October 15, 1938 in Oglesby, Texas at Oglesby Methodist Church and preceded her in death in 1988. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Charles A Patterson and Emily F. Casey Patterson, Kathryn Smith Maxwell (daughter), Gary Cubley (infant daughter), Thomas (Trace) Cubley III (grandson), and Penny Zapach (granddaughter), her brothers, Raymond, Leland and Joe Patterson and sister, Dorothy Patterson Meacham.
Ruth was the matriarch of five generations with thirteen great-grandchildren and one step-great grandson and eight great-great grandchildren. Ruth is survived by her son, Tommy Cubley and wife, Pat, daughter, Karen C. Rachal and husband, Kerry. Also survived by four grandchildren, Kimberly Bobo, and her husband, Glendon, Marla Criss and her husband, Kevin, grandson, Jay Smith and wife Donna, Grandson, Clint Maxwell and wife, Kristy, and Penny’s Husband, Richard Zapach.
