Sylvia was born in Cleveland, Texas on December 8, 1941 to James and Claudine Matlock of Fostoria, Texas. Shortly after her birth, Sylvia’s father was drafted into World War II, where he served in the armed forces in Germany until the end of the war. Upon his return, the Matlock family moved to League City, Texas. Sylvia attended elementary and junior high school in Kemah, Texas and Webster, Texas and graduated from Clear Creek High School in 1959. She then attended Sam Houston State Teachers College.
She met her husband, Jerry Keith Fetters, in Morgan City, Louisiana in 1961. They married at League City Baptist Church on August 31, 1963. They raised two children, daughter Michelle Kay, born 1966, and son Bradley Keith, born 1968. They spent their early married years in Norway and England before returning to the United States, where they made their home in Denver, Colorado, and eventually Houston, Texas.
Sylvia’s favorite place to be was their mountain home in Silverthorne, Colorado where she loved to ski and visit with the year-round residents. Her faithful dog, Scooter, accompanied her to Colorado and wherever else she went, never leaving her side. We are sure she and Scooter are once again reunited! Sylvia also enjoyed antiquing while living overseas. She was known to be quite the negotiator at the antique markets in London. She and Jerry enjoyed extensive travel during their retirement years. Some of her favorite destinations included Botswana and Tanzania, Africa. Sylvia was an accomplished hostess, having attended Cordon Bleu cooking school. She took pleasure in entertaining friends and family throughout the years.
Sylvia accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior when she was 8 years old. During a revival at League City Baptist Church, the visiting pastor spoke to the children in Sunday School about how Jesus loved them and died for them. Sylvia gave her life to Jesus Christ that very day. Her favorite pastime was telling anyone who would listen, and sometimes even those who did not wish to listen, how much she loved Jesus and how much they needed to know him too! She led ladies’ Bible Study Fellowship and Community Bible Study for several years, in addition to working with teenage youth groups in Sunday School and Sunday night Bible Study. We know she is home in heaven today with many jewels in her crown!
Sylvia suffered 47 years from diabetes. It took its toll on her physical body, but she persevered in spirit.
Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, James and Claudine Matlock. She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Keith Fetters, and their two devoted children - daughter, Michelle Kay Fetters Boehm, and son, Bradley Keith Fetters, and his wife, Desiree Juliette Fetters. She leaves a legacy of five grandchildren - Jack Harrison Fetters, Julia Rose Fetters, Blake William Fetters, Luke Bradley Boehm, and Lily Kay Boehm. She delighted in telling each grandchild they were her “favorite” in private, and each knew they were precious to her. Sylvia was treasured and loved beyond measure, and will be greatly missed by her family on this side of eternity.
“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” Proverbs 31: 28
