Walter Hawkins Decherd

Walter Hawkins Decherd was born on February 13, 1917 in Corsicana, TX and went to be with the Lord on August 2, 2012 at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter H. Decherd and Anna Lee Oda Decherd. His wife of 71 years Eleda Soape Decherd, his sister Sarah Kate McClure his son Thomas Lee Decherd and granddaughter Denise Decherd Michalak.

He is survived by son Walter G. Decherd, Sr. & wife Konnie, granddaughter Rhonda Decherd Garner & husband Pat, grandsons Thomas L. Decherd, Jr. & wife Sharie, Walter G. Decherd Jr., Michael H. Decherd & wife Lori. Great grandchildren Danielle R. Michalak, G. Garrett Michalak & wife Jade, Ryan P. Garner, Chelsey Michalak, Trey Garner & wife Kelly, A. Taylor Williamson, Thomas L. Decherd III, Dawn N. Decherd, and Rylee M. Decherd. Great great grandchildren Bailey D. Michalak, Braeden T. Garner and Amethyst M. Michalak. In addition many friends and neighbors.

Walter graduated from Corsicana High School in Texas and then went on to serve in the Army during World War II in Fort Dix NJ as a technical welder. He then worked many years in the auto/body shop repair industry, spending much of his time at A.C. Collins Ford in Pasadena, TX. After he retired he and Eleda moved from Houston to his beloved San Leon on Galveston Bay. He spent his time there, fishing, babysitting great grandchildren, tinkering in his garage and as always welcoming anyone who wanted to hear a good story.
