Whitney was born into a military family and moved around for much of his childhood. He graduated from Samuel Clemens HS in San Antonio, TX then moved on to further his education at Abilene Christian University. Following his secondary education, he served as a United States Naval Corpsman from 1979-1987. Upon retirement from the navy, he continued his medical career as a surgical technician, medical cast technician and college professor.
Whitney Tanner loved being around people. No matter where he went, even out of the country, he was going to run into someone he knew. Whitney had a soft spot for kids and was a wonderful father and grandfather. He was super non-confrontational and didn’t let anyone steal his joy. He was adventurous, compassionate, confident in his career, intelligent, creative, resourceful, athletic, and hospitable. Whitney enjoyed serving others in his home.
Whitney loved sports, music, good food, cooking, traveling, and spending time at the beach, fishing, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. One of his most beloved hobbies was serving as a semi-pro football coach.
Whitney was preceded in death by his sister Lehua Clay and father Ruben Tanner.
He will be deeply missed by his mother Thelma Tanner; brother Orice Tanner; daughters Alexis Dixon and husband Jonathan, Chantia Clark and husband Jerald, Crystal Marie; step-son Ziek Smiley; girlfriend Mary Gonzales; and grandsons Noah, Raekwon, Jerald, and Greg.
