It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gwendolyn Hahn Spang, who departed this life on November 27, 2025, at home surrounded by her three loving daughters. Gwendolyn was born and raised in Caldwell, NJ to William and Edith Hahn, graduating from Grover Cleveland High School in 1956. She also attended Tufts University and Boston School of Occupational Therapy, meeting her future husband, David Spang, in their freshman year. Dave and Gwen then built a life together that lasted 65 years.
After her school years, Gwen was busy raising her four children and running a daycare business in Sudbury, Massachusetts while her husband taught physics in Lexington. She spent every summer of her life on Cape Cod, initially with her parents in West Dennis, and then in North Truro with her family, where Dave was a naturalist ranger with Cape Cod National Seashore since the early 1960’s. In the winters, weekends were spent vacationing at their second home in Stratton, ME. As her children grew older, she became a science lab technician at Lexington High School starting in the mid-1980’s until the purchase of a new home in North Truro in 1997.
Gwen’s spent her retirement years tending to her historic 1803 home, working with her daughter in the management of a guest house in Provincetown, and volunteering at Old Harbor Lifesaving Station and the Truro Historical Society. She had a strong passion for history and surrounded herself with her prized collections of family and local antiques and collectables. Gwen embraced the Cape Cod life; sailing in the harbor, taking daily walks with her black lab, finding hidden caches of wild blueberries which she turned into the very best blueberry pie, relaxing in the sun by her gardens, and visiting with friends and family. Evenings were often spent at her dining room table with her jigsaw puzzles, listening to big band music or the Red Sox game. Friends and family valued the time spent around a puzzle with Gwen, where she quietly imparted wisdom and guidance while putting in pieces. The new generations of her family developed the adage “ What would Grammy do?” (WWGD) to assist in decisions on life and decorum. She was the master of valuing the simple pleasures of life, an eternal optimist, and a woman of grace and grit.
Remaining to cherish Gwen’s memory are her three daughters; Deborah Spang-Dionne, Lynda (John) LaRiviere, and Tracy (John) Wertis, her seven granddaughters; Christina, Amanda, Sandra, Gail, Caitlyn, Kristen, and Sarah, two step-grandchildren; Katrina and Gregory, and four great-grandchildren; Lillian, Harrison, Grace, and Goldie. Gwen was predeceased by her husband (David), her son (William Spang), and her son-in-law (Curtis Dionne).
We invite all who knew Gwen to share their favorite memories or pictures on the online guestbook memorial page: www.dignitymemorial.com. A private family service will be planned in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Truro Historical Society: www.https//trurohistoricalsociety.org
