Irving G. Freimuth of Wellfleet, Massachusetts passed into eternal life on November 1, 2023 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Irving was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary (Marchese). He was the son of A. John and Emma (Dybick) Freimuth of Middletown, Connecticut.
Irving leaves his daughter, Susan Freimuth and her wife Desiree Jerrick of Andover, Connecticut, and his son Paul Freimuth and his wife Mia Jacob of East Setauket, New York. He is also survived by grandson Andrew Freimuth of East Setauket and granddaughter Erika Freimuth and her husband, Caleb Marhoover, of Hopewell, New Jersey.
Irving was born on May 15, 1929 in Middletown, Connecticut. He was educated in Middletown and had a long career in the automotive business, primarily as parts manager at Jackson Chevrolet Company in Middletown where he worked for 43 years, retiring in 1994. Following his retirement, he moved to Wellfleet with his wife Mary. They enjoyed 21 years together there until Mary’s death in 2019.
Music and the church were two passions in Irving’s life that provided him great joy and fulfillment. He became the full-time organist and choir director of his family parish, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Middletown, at the age of 14. Irving served this church for 25 years before moving to another parish and becoming a member of the choir. While there he also started a men’s singing group, the Spirits of Harmony, and led them through many performances for religious services and social occasions. The group became known throughout the southern New England area and was invited to perform at regional meetings and events. Irving and Mary also enjoyed singing with Cappella Cantorum in Deep River and with a concert choir based at the Portland Congregational Church during their years in Middletown.
Irving and Mary also had a life-long passion for Cape Cod, vacationing there annually for many years. In 1977 they built their second home in Wellfleet and enjoyed many summers there with family and friends. They connected with Cape communities of faith at the Chapel of St. James the Fisherman in Wellfleet, and at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Harwich. Upon Irving’s retirement and relocation to Wellfleet, they became active in the music program at St. Peter’s, where Irving started men’s singing groups, the Visionaires and a men’s quartet, and sang with the choir. He also sang with the Chatham Music Club, Chatham Christmas Chorus, and Pleasant Bay Camerata for many years.
Family was another passion in Irving’s life. He was a loving and involved father to his two children. He cherished his two grandchildren and looked forward to every opportunity to spend time with them. He remained close to all his family members throughout his life. His delight in their company, and theirs in his, drew the family together over the years and will continue to do so in the years ahead.
A celebration of Irving’s life will be held on December 16 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Route 137, Harwich, Massachusetts. The family will welcome friends and family members starting at 10:00 at the church, with the service to follow at 11:00. A repast will be offered after the service in the church’s fellowship hall. The service will also be live-streamed on the church’s YouTube channel.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor his memory are invited to contribute to the Organ Fund at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Please visit the church website at https://stpeterslutherancapecod.org for information on this and the service live-stream.
Nickerson Funeral Home, Wellfleet, Massachusetts is in charge of arrangements.
