Robert J. Hautanen, a kind-hearted and hard-working individual, passed away on December 2, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on August 22, 1935, in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, Robert lived his entire life in the town he cherished.
Robert graduated from Wellfleet High School in 1953. He served his country with dedication in the US Coast Guard from 1953 to 1973. Following his military career, Robert pursued his passion for the sea by dragging whatever Shellfish was in season on the Waters around Cape Cod on his boat, the Carol and Sherry. He also worked his Shellfish grant out of Wellfleet that was originally initiated by his grandfather in 1902. Additionally, he served as the night watchman in Wellfleet Harbor, ensuring the safety and security of the area.
On February 14, 1976, Robert married the late Cheryl (Collins) Hautanen. Together, they raised their son, Davin, in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, instilling in him the values of family and community that Robert and Cheryl shared.
In his personal time, Robert enjoyed clamming, riding boats, and sharing stories from old Wellfleet about the train, the flats, and the fishing. His love for his hometown and its rich history was evident in the tales he recounted.
Robert leaves behind his son Davin and his wife Kelly as well as their children Karly Hautanen, Shaye Hautanen, and Ethan Hautanen, as well as his stepdaughter Kim (Eggleston) Hayward and Her children Lillie Hayward and Gus Hayward.
Robert J. Hautanen will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his love for the sea.
A service will be held to remember Robert at the First Congregational Church in Wellfleet on January 10, 2025 at 10:00 AM, with a gathering in the church's Fellowship Hall after the service.
