Peacefully entered Paradise in her 82nd year with family beside her at Midland Gardens Care Community senior home, in Scarborough on February 6th, 2023. Dorothy was born in the Commonwealth of Dominica on January 25th1941 to Excellent Paul Hurtault and Theresa Darling Hurtault.
Dorothy “Dots” is survived by her sister Lydia Shillingford. Her nephews George Joseph, Worrell Hurtault, McDonald Hurtault, Dana Hurtault, Gregory Hurtault, Jeffrey Hurtault, Tony Hurtault, Francis Hurtault, Mervin Hurtault and James Hurtault. Her nieces, Marina Bradshaw, Glenora Joseph-Parker, Belinda Charles, Jean Hurtault, Sylma Webber, Gloria Francis, Alithea Hurtault, Sandra Joseph, Anthea Hurtault, and too many grand-nieces and grand-nephews to mention.
Dorothy C. Hurtault was a beacon of love, a gentle soul, and a true lover of life. Her passing has left a void that will be felt by all who knew her. She was a wonderful woman with a caring heart who cherished every moment spent with her family. Her unwavering love will continue to be a guiding light in the lives of those she touched. “Dots” was a nature lover finding peace and solace in the beauty of plants and everything around her and, her zest for life was contagious inspiring all who had the privilege of knowing her. She loved sports such as basketball and netball. As a young athlete she played netball for the Local Netball Association in Dominica, in addition she was chosen to play on the Island Netball team for tournaments around the Caribbean. In her spare times she loved to do her crossword puzzles and read her Bible scriptures. She was a true Prayer Warrior.
Dorothy enjoyed working as a senior sales clerk at Kresge store for over 20 years, where she retired. She was a hard worker and expected the same from her employees and coworkers. She loved to bake and cook our favourite Dominican dishes for the family to enjoy. She hosted many social gatherings, including birthdays and holidays, with family and friends. Dorothy was also the famous family photographer as she never missed the opportunity to capture beautiful photos at our family events. These photos will forever be cherished as we have the pleasure to look back at them and smile for years to come.
Dorothy was generous with her nieces and nephews, but especially with her grandnieces and grandnephews. Dots never hesitated to babysit them, often dropping everything to help in a pinch. She took the pleasure of knitting hats and scarves as gifts for her family around the Christmas holiday. She was charismatic and always had a great sense of humour. At her senior home care, her nurses and the PSW staff all loved her and spoke of wonderful things she did and said, especially the words - Thank you!
Please join us in celebrating the remarkable and beautiful life of Dorothy. In tribute to “Dots” and her signature style, we invite you to wear a black felt hat, a rimmed hat, a knitted scarf, bandana scarf around your neck or hair or a tie; with a touch of her favorite color purple, reminiscent of the ones she always had on. This simple act will serve as a reminder of her ability to find joy, be compassionate and share witty jokes which she had in the everyday life she lived.
We love you and we will always miss you, “Dots”. Besides being our beloved aunt, sister, grand-aunt, godmother and best friend, our cherished memories of you will live forever in our hearts. You were loved by so many people you met. We’re so honoured to be your nieces and nephews and we will forever be grateful to have had you for 82 wonderful years.
Dorothy may you rest in peace. Your love and spirit will continue to shine bright, forever cherished by those who held you dear, and deeply missed but never forgotten.
