Born – August 21, 1923
Passed Away – December 31, 2020
With great sadness and unexpectedness, we announce that, after a brief illness of only a few days, Howard passed away at Scarborough Grace Hospital in Scarborough. Howard was in his 98th year. He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Joan, his only child Heather and grandchild Cara. He is predeceased by his brothers Ray and Victor and survived by his sister Jean (Don Beck) and brother Bruce (Karen) and many nieces and nephews.
Howard was born in London, England, and emigrated, with his parents and older brother, to Saskatchewan at age 4. He lived in Saskatchewan until joining the Canadian Military Forces at age 17 at the beginning of WWII. He later transferred to Montreal for training in the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. The Battalion was sent overseas and participated in the D-Day invasion of France, Belgium, Holland up to the Baltic Coast where they fought many battles. Howard was awarded an insignia and the rank of Knight of the French National Legion of Honour in 2014, by the President of the Republic of France, in recognition of his professional involvement in the liberation of France. After VE Day, Howard was returned to England and eventually back to Canada where he travelled out to Vancouver, where his family had moved to during the war. He stayed there in hospital for a shoulder repair for a year and then returned to Toronto and married Joan, whom he had met upon his return from England.
He was a hard working employee of the Toronto Transit Commission for 39 years, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a member of the First Alliance Church. Although many of his family and friends are no longer with us, he will be greatly missed by those who know him as a loving husband, a wonderful father and grandfather, and a true friend.
Due to covid-19 restrictions, the visitation and private service is by invitation only, with burial follow.
