John Valentine Fernandes passed away peacefully at his home on January 15, 2026, just one month shy of his 101st birthday. He was born on February 14, 1925, in Kundapur, India. His sweet and loving nature befitted the popular day on which he was born.
After losing his mother at a very young age, John faced many hardships growing up. He was forced to leave home early in life, shouldering responsibilities far beyond his years. Perhaps shaped by these early challenges he devoted his own life to caring deeply and selflessly for his family. As the oldest surviving member of the Fernandes family, he dutifully fulfilled the role of patriarch, provider, and protector.
He passed his remarkably long life making an effort each day to live the values of a simple Christian. Along his life's path, he worked tirelessly in many different countries from Pakistan (Pakistan Cables), to Kuwait (Kuwait Oil Company) and finally Canada. Here he was a proud employee of the CIBC bank. He served as an active member of the St. Joseph’s Parish community, dedicating much of his retired life to the Knights of Columbus and the prayer group. He was a proud parishioner, energized and motivated by the Holy Spirit and relied on by many for spiritual counsel, discernment and prayers.
He will be missed by his beloved wife Jean ‘Jenny’ (nee D’Souza) whom he doted on and entertained with good humour for over 62 years; faithful companions, they sweetly encouraged and cared for each other through old age. He was a proud father to his only child Hyacinth and devoted grandad to Rhea and Sarah, his pride and joy. He will be remembered as a world class telephone operator for the Fernandes household, his short and sweet turn of phrases and ensuring everyone had a drink when they visited- he opened his home and heart to many.
He died as he lived, quietly, with strength; in the end, there were no afflictions, ailments, or illness. Until his last dying breath he called on the name of Jesus with great awe and reverence. He leaves this world certain to have entered the fullness of God’s glory.
