Mieczysław Puczko

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mieczysław Puczko. He was born on May 16, 1931 in a small town Hrud near Biała Podlaska, Poland, and passed away on November 12, 2022 in Scarborough, Ontario.

He was predeceased by his beloved first wife Stasia, his second love and wife Marysia, and his youngest daughter Małgosia whose tragic death was the heaviest loss in his life.

Mieczysław is survived by two daughters, Barbara and Krystyna, by his granddaughter Karolina, great grandchildren Stephan, Kyla and Lukas, and by stepdaughters Monika and Wiesia. He will be always remembered by his last love and best friend Władzia.

A loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Mieczysław lived for his family and made personal sacrifices for the family. He worked hard but he liked his jobs and took pride in a job well done. He was trained as a lathe operator, but he really liked building, repairing, and improving things. He belonged to an innovation club at his company.

He was 67 when he came to Canada and despite his retirement age and the lack of English, he found a job as a maintenance mechanic and once again was able to do what he liked: fixing and repairing. He was very proud of himself whenever he repaired a machine that would otherwise be written off.

Both of his wives died of cancer and he had been taking care of them to the very end. For the last two years of his life, he stayed with his daughters. This time around, he was the one who needed to be taken care of, due to Alzheimer’s disease. In his final stage, he couldn’t communicate, he lost interest in everything, but always remained calm and patient. His physical health held up until the end, and he enjoyed his meals until his last day.

Mieczysław was a devout Catholic. He forgot everything else, but he had never forgotten the “Our Father” prayer. He participated in the Holy Mass on the last Sunday of his life.

A Memorial Mass for Mieczysław Puczko will take place on Saturday, November 26 at 12 pm at Our Lady Queen of Poland Church, 625 Middlefield Road, Toronto, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Retirement Home, Copernicus Lodge Foundation at https://www.copernicuslodge.com/.
