Unfortunately, I have recently learned of Brian's death. It is acutely painful for me because he was so full of life. Brian and I spent years and many hours together in high school at Fountain meetings and in African History class. There is no one word to describe Brian. Unique really doesn't even cover it. He was beyond that. He was this other-worldly presence. He was kind to all. He had no biases or prejudices. He was accepting. He was forgiving of flaws and respectful of differences. He loved humanity for humanity's sake. He saw the commonalities in all people. He was selfless and modest to an extreme. He could always be relied upon for a laugh or a smile or a kind word. He was always interested in learning more about others' stories than in talking about his own. Brian made Fountain meetings easier for me. I spent four years as an editor to never have any of my writing published in The Fountain, and to have to listen to rejection, but Brian never made criticism personal. He had extraordinary diplomacy skills for a young person. He was incredibly intelligent, and I enjoyed debating with him about African History class or other things. He was an educated and responsible global citizen. What Brian and I had is tough to describe. It's as though my soul was transparent to him and he could see it in my eyes. He could see that I was suffering, but I wouldn't let him do anything about it. I didn't want to talk about my life back then to him because I didn't know how to talk about it to anybody. And he didn't really talk to me about his life because he was so modest. So we did this thing where we'd just stare at each other from across a classroom and wonder endlessly about each other's lives. I never lost that vague curiosity. I often wondered where he ended up. Having Brian around, even if we never hung out outside of school, made a difference in my life. It's easy to get caught up with stress and worry, and those things can sometimes prevent us from enjoying the moment. Brian was somebody who had intense focus. When he was there, he was all there. He was present. He was paying attention. He had a smile. He took time out to find out what was going on with other people's lives. When I share Brian's story with people, that is what I will tell them. That is one lesson that Brian taught me which I will now try to remember every day. Not to get so caught up with worrying about the future that we can't enjoy the present moment. The present moment is, in truth, all that we have. It's all that there is. So it's all that life is really about. Brian was wise because he knew that, and he was not going to let his whole life pass him by. He enjoyed the small moments. And he knew that the most important thing was other people. Upon graduating LS, he wrote in my yearbook: Laurel, It's been great getting to know you better this year. You're an incredibly smart person and very socially aware, I can only see you succeeding in the future. Good luck next year! Love, Brian. And then he wrote a postscript with his email address at Hampshire. I should have emailed him. I never emailed him. I could have told him that I'm a real writer now, and he would have been so happy and supportive and encouraging. But that's not what matters, really. What matters is that we all stop and realize what's really important in life, and although Brian surely had many skills and talents, what I will remember the most about Brian is that he knew what life was all about. We should all strive to be so peaceful and so unafraid to just love humanity. That is an extreme act of courage. Brian is sorely missed. He will never be forgotten.

Brian Edward Gershon, 27 years old of Palm Beach County, FL, formerly of Sudbury, MA, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 26, 2015. Brian was currently attending Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL and he spent countless hours volunteering, most recently at the Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

Brian will always be remembered for his tremendous love of animals, his world-wide love of travel and his gentle spirit. In his short life, Brian positively impacted everyone he touched through his friendship, kindness and humor. The world is a better place for Brian having lived in it and he will be sorely missed.

Brian loved animals his entire life, from family pets, including his beloved companion Molly, who was adopted from Buddy Dog, to studying animal behavior at one of the country's leading programs in the field. In an effort to preserve Brian's passion for taking care of all animals, and especially his desire to make sure all dogs, young, old, abandoned, abused or otherwise hindered find a loving home, a fund has been set up at Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

We are trying to raise $15,000 to have a puppy pod in our new facility named after Brian. You can see from the mock up below how this could look. This will be a permanent reminder of his love for the dogs. Will you help us today by making a donation?

I am so appreciative that Megan reached out to me recently.  I was lucky enough to have taught Brian at L-S in both Modern America and African History.  When I think of Brian, I remember his infectious giggle, sense of humor, warmth, and intelligence.  He was a star in both of my courses.  No matter how bad a day I was having, Brian cheered me up.  Once we got to know each other better, he could tell when I was off my game and would say, Ms. Han, what's wrong?  And I would say something like, Oh you know and he would laugh and say, Ms. Han, don't let the students get you down.  You're an awesome teacher, and I love you!  It always made me laugh and smile.  

Brian's love for, and connection with, animals are reflections of his goodness as a person.  He showed his love for my chocolate lab, Nellie, in so many ways.  He would laugh at me when I would say with disgust and exasperation, Nellie is driving me crazy!  She goes into the woods, eats other dog's poop, and then throws up on the carpet!!!  THE SMELL!!!  He'd say to me, That's what labs do!  Nellie is so awesome.  Don't be mad at her.  They're poopsicles for dogs!

Brian was the special student who gave to teachers as much as he received. I will hold him in my heart forever.  I will never forget your beautiful son, brother, and friend.  Nellie passed away a year ago (on Veteran's Day).  It makes me smile to imagine Brian and Nellie together now -- playing with full abandonment and joy.

I have no words. I looked you up hoping to get in touch again after so many years when we first met in High School both taking part in the exchange program. I am shocked to my core to find out that you have left us way too early. I am sending my deepest condolences to your family and friends. 
I remember first meeting you on your last day in Germany. We got along right away and I thought to myself, man, how come we didn't run into each other before, that guy is fun! Fortunately, we had the chance to become good friends in the years to come.
I will hold my memories of you dear: your love of animals and your dogs (I especially remember you telling me stories about Molly), that New Year's party when you were wearing that black sweater on which you had your favourite German word printed - Unendlichkeit, or us just hanging and laughing and talking nonsense. I can't believe you're gone. I am proud to have known you. Rest in peace, Brian.

To everyone who loved Brian, I send my deepest condolences at your tragic loss. I remember Brian as a happy, smart, all-around great kid.  In particular, I remember using Brian as my cover to go see the Tim Allen movie, "Galaxy Quest." Every time I see that movie being shown, I think of Brian and smile.  I hope someday that the good memories will hold more joy than pain for all of you.

Hi screambri. It still hits me like a ton of bricks when I remember that you're gone after having the thought to call or text you. I don't think that will ever stop. I have been going back through old messages between us and they make me laugh and break my heart. I'll never forget the first time I saw you. You were wearing that Ghostbuster's hoodie, and you were laughing. I knew we would be friends, but I had no idea how much of an impact you would have on my life. You were a great friend and listener, and such a bright light for me.

Please know that so many things will make me think of you always. Love you.

     I cannot believe that I am writing this right now. It all seems so surreal. I remember first meeting you back in high school. We both would hang out in different areas but they were right next to each other, so we saw each other all the time. Then we started to get to know eachother more as our parents became closer. We'd hang out at barbecues and social gatherings that they had. But we really started becoming close when we both started our journey at Umass together. While there, you became one of my closest friends, my roomie, neighbor and confident. I remember those times we would just hang out talking about life and what we wanted to do (especially since we both were all about animals!). And then there were those times where we'd just let loose and have fun lIke you're supposed to in college. Through all these years that I have known you there has always been one thing that has been very apparent to me. What a beautiful and loving person you were. Which is why I am so devastated about what has happened. We have lost one of our most beautiful souls and will be worse off for it. I take some solace in the fact that you were in my life and how lucky I am for that. I love you Brian and you will be remembered and loved always. Rest In peace my wonderful friend.

Beth, Glenn, Megan, Michael and family, I am so saddened at the early death of Brian. Having lost both sisters at a young age, I can understand the void/pain you Megan and Michael are feeling. Beth and Glenn, I can't begin to comprehend the incredible void/pain you must be experiencing. My heart aches for you and I pray that one day you'll be able to move forward without the sadness you feel now. Blessings to you all.

We will always remember the Thanksgivings and Easters we spent with your family in Sudbury.  We were all displaced and we became each others families.  Such nice memories of all of the kids hanging out and enjoying the day.  I'll always remember the time I got the canned cranberries for your family and you all were horrified when I stirred them up and put them in a bowl instead of slicing.  Brian though still ate them!!!
I loved hearing Brian telling me all about his pet rats too.  my girls had pet mice so I was always interested.  I was always so impressed how Brian would take care of Molly when needed. Such a wonderful sweet loving boy taken far too soon.

Cousin Brian, I remember we first met when you and your Mom visited us in Ireland in 1998. You were amazed to find that we watched all the same TV shows as you guys. My younger brother Niall was so impressed to find that you knew all of the words to the Pokemon theme tune. In a sombre way, I still smile when I think about that.

And years later, in 2011 when I visited you guys in Boston you spent the whole day with us, showing me around Salem, MA and of course Boston. I was really glad that I had got to know you now that we had grown up. I looked forward to showing you around Ireland some day. I never imagined you'd be gone so soon.

Judging by the comments on here, you clearly touched and moved an awful lot of people in those 27 years.

You were an incredibly significant person in my life and your loss is felt deeply and painfully.  I was drawn to you because of your magnetism, quick wit and gigantic heart, and I'm so privileged to have known you and loved you. 

The years of incredible experiences we had together will live on in memories I'll carry with me for the rest of my life.  I'll keep them and recollect them with fondness.  Though they sting a little, in my gut, because I can no longer share them with you directly, I'll take comfort in knowing that every thought I have of you and of our time together is still shared with you in some way and in some space that I can't yet comprehend.  

And every time I see a palm tree, I'll think of you and think of the special place where you are.

I remember first meeting you when we were kids at your parents house while Megan, you, and I played mad libs for hours that night putting funny words in the blank spaces. We laughed for hours. 
Your smile and laugh I have in every memory.  You shine so bright. Which leads me to another memory of old orchard beach. You and your father were taking Megan to vacation to see me, my parents and my baby at the time Anastasia.  All you had to do is look at her, hold her once and she was smitten. You were her first crush! 
I am deeply saddened to hear of your passing. I am honored To have known such an amazing and beautiful person. Everytime I see a giraffe I think of you. You and your family are in my heart and prayers. Xoxo

I don't know how to put all my feelings into words here, but I have to say something. Brian was the closest person to me ever in life. I've had a couple other people I am blessed to have been close with, but Brian and I had something I could never explain to another person. 
I am not exaggerating when I say I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for him. I have survived my worst days in life only because I had him to call and calm me down. The best days of my life, he is the first person I thought to tell about it. Even in the random times or bored moments throughout life, he is who I called. And vice versa. 
Beyond being cousins, we had a friendship and bond that I could never explain to anyone. Even those that knew we were close through the years. 
Even writing this, it is not ringing true to me. I can't imagine a life without him, let alone actually living it. 
Brian could be a little socially bashful at times, but anyone who got the privilege to be in his circle knew he was the funniest, best person to have around. I told him all the time he had no reason to ever feel awkward with anyone because if he only knew how amazing and witty and hilarious he really was, he would know that anyone and everyone would love him always. 
I never once saw this day as a possibility in my mind. The moments of realization I have of his passing make me unable to breathe. 
Brian, I will always miss your laughter. I will forever be looking for the comfort I had with you. How easy and judgement free our relationship was. How even if we didn't fully understand each other's situations, we always understood each other. I will miss your funny expressions, and our lifetime of inside jokes. All of our memories that would not make sense to other people. Ill miss our days as young kids trying to stay up all night, our days together through our losses, our life lessons we always seemed to experience at the same time despite our different circumstances. Talking on the phone all day and night. Listening to songs and watching TV in silence with each other until commercial break. No matter what, you were always there. And I could never thank you enough.
Right now I'm not able to fully take in your absence in the world, but I know I miss you more and more every day. The more time goes on, the more I realize all that I;m missing by you not being here.
I can't stand talking about you in past tense. 
I will spend every day of my life wishing for a day of us on the beach laughing and lounging in the sun. 
I think you know how much I love you, but I don't think you ever really grasped how insanely much I relied on you always being by my side. 
All i can hope now is that you are in a better place, and that your family and friends can somehow find comfort and peace. 
I'm sorry we never got those matching tattoos. You begged me a million times and I just wanted us to wait until we had the perfect idea for one, but I waited too long. For some stupid reason I have been so sad about that. I just want part of you with me forever. And i know you always will be, but its not the same. Really, I just want you back. I'm sending you a billion sorrys and thank yours for everything we've been through in life. I could talk about you for hours, but I still don't think I'd be able to express all I feel about you. I love you so much Brian. I always, always will.

Brian was one of my first friends at Camp Calumet. We went the same week as eachother until we were 16. One of my favorite memories of him is us pretending we were on the Titanic during Row Boat Sinking at free period, and I will never forget how we were both in tears singing along to Dispatch by the campfire on our last night. Brian had a big heart and he will forever be missed.

I'll miss your sense of humor and I'll think of you everything I am cooing over any animal. I loved our very random and unexpected conversations. They were my favorite. I still have the letters we wrote as kids. I'll cherish them even more now.

Brian babysat Andrew and Drew thought Brian was so cool. Not many high school guys would be cool & fun with an 8 yr.old, but Brian easily was.  We had a troublesome spaniel at the time, but old Nigel was no trouble for Brian, in fact, Nigel was jelly in Brian's hands.  We hope, YOU, Brian, can feel all the love that gushed out in torrents since you left. Look after your family, give them coutenence to continue and give them graciousness and peace.

One of my favorite memories, going back a couple of years, was when Beth, Brian, Julie, Mike (came up for a few days) and I went to Maine for a week.  Brian and I worked on this huge crossword puzzle every night.  I love crossword puzzles and he put up with me every night working our way through it.  We laughed a lot!

Same vacation, on the drive up with Brian and Beth, I got a new phone, Brian unbeknownst to me, or Beth changed the ring tone on it to some song, I think he kept calling it, which baffled me (and Beth too!) because we couldn't figure out where that music was coming from, after much laughter on his part, he finally clued us in.

Brian had a life full of love, happiness, and laughter.  I was lucky enough to know Brian for a long time and although I have not seen him in a few years, we spoke regularly.  In hard times, Brian was always able to see positive things and I don't think we have ever spoken without many moments of laughter.  I always remember this about Brian and try hard to find positive things and laugh when times are hard.  I always laugh when I think of Brian, but I cry very hard now and miss him more than I could have imagined.  He will always be an amazing part of my life.

Brian is someone I never got to meet in person,  but was someone that will always mean the world to me.  We spoke on the phone and through messenger on Facebook so often it was like we already had met in person.  That's one of the last messages I have from him.  We were planning our meet up in Florida and he said  I'm so excited but I feel like I know you so well already that it feels like we've met" it made me smile that day,  and will moving forward but it still breaks my heart to know I never got to give this amazing person the biggest hug.  Brian was always a big  supporter of mine.  He made me smile and laugh so much.  I can only hope that in his short life that I made half the impact on his life that he did on mine.  Theres this song on the radio that makes me think of him.  "it's been a long hard day without you my friend,  I'll tell you all about it when I see you again. "  love you Brian,  and my condolences to his friends and family in this hard  time.

Brian was a very special person, one whom I thought would never pass so soon. He was the first and only to stand up for me when I was bullied in 5th grade due to my extreme shyness. When I was in 6th grade, we'd play pokemon with a couple others (fun times, and it beat foursquare), and in 7th, he was in a bunch of my classes and was honestly one of the most fun (and funny) people to be around. Although we were in different social groups, moreso in high school, during every encounter we had with each other, he always treated me as a friend, even though we were never close. He treated everyone he met that way, and I've admired it my entire life. In late high school we'd talk online sometimes and it was then I realized just how much of a caring and empathic person he really was deep down, and how much he loved Molly and other people in his life. It breaks my heart that he passed so soon, and I think that says so much about him. He really made an impact on my life even though we were in totally different social groups and weren't quite friends, even, and that speaks volumes about him as a person. I was certain that he was going to change the world (for both people and animals), and after I found out about his passing, it took me a couple days to realize that I was right and he already has, so much. To Brian's family and good friends - I am so sorry for your loss and I can't begin to imagine what you're going through, knowing how much Brian's kindness, fun, and love of animals has impacted me alone. He will never be forgotten, even  by those of us who were on the outside of his circle, people you might not think his existence impacted much at all. Growing up, Brian's kindness, humor, genuineness, and treatment of others was something I always, and will always, see as something everyone should look up to.

I will remember Brian's gentle spirit and kind heart. His easy-going personality, humor, and compassion made him a wonderful friend and he will be greatly missed. I am thankful for great memories of family get togethers where I got to see Brian as a loving son.

Brian was one of a kind. I never met anyone with so much love that was given so freely. Brian always made me feel special and loved. We shared a love of animals that was like no other. I remember how his heart would soar when he was with his beloved Molly. We had so many memories together over the years and I felt honored to watch him grow into a wonderful young man. Brian taught me so many things, the most important was acceptance. He loved everyone he encountered and never judged anyone. I wish there were more people like him in this world. It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my "adopted little brother" but I will always be talking and praying to him. I know he is watching over us now. I love you so much Brian.

Brian had true heart and soul. I saw you only two weeks ago and was heartbroken to find that would be the last time....I'll be missing you....and I will listen to Lana always in your memory.

My younger Brother Brian passed away unexpectedly this past Sunday 4/26/15. He would've been 28 years old on May 27. At a loss for words. Wish it was me and not him. I can hear him now. He was so cool, if we could talk right now we would continue our conversation from just a few days before as if nothing even happened. You enhanced the lives you touched. Your warm, energetic, and happy personality created life long friendships and made the world a better place. You understood this crazy world and were wise beyond your years. We had an indescribable bond. I know what true brotherhood means thanks to you. A day won't go by I won't think about you for the rest of my life. Love you

It was my honor and pleasure to work with Brian as his teacher. I am so very sorry for your loss, he was an exceptionally fine young man, a very special person.

My heartfelt love and thoughts are with you.  I will pray for Brian and all of you.  I remember the wonderful times the Simmons' and the Gershons' celebrated various holidays together as new transferees to Massachusetts.  Brian was a bright light of laughter and fun.

Brian was truly a special person, his gentle soul, and kindness to animals and people was very much admired to many. We will always remember his smile and easy going way. May you know our thoughts are with  you at this sad time. Brian will be missed, but his spirit will live on with all of us.

I have SO many memories of Brian Gershon that are helping me get through these low days. We used to AIM chat back in middle school about the people we wanted to become. He helped shape me and I will always think of his influence as I continue to grow. Anyone that knew him knew his love of animals so my friends from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School have set up this donation page to benefit Save A Dog, Inc. in our hometown. I'm so sad that the world has lost you, Brian Gershon. Though we lost touch since I left Sudbury years ago, you have always remained one of my all time favorite people. You made middle school fun, and funny, and you were always so completely yourself at an age when all I wanted was to be anyone else, it was inspiring. I know you had your struggles too, like we all do, and I think we bonded over that, but you were always the most positive and sincere person I knew. Heaven has definitely gained an angel, but it's too soon for us! I am sending love and prayers to Brian's family and just want you all to know what an impact he made in a short time - this Facebook page is just covered with love! Thanks for being here and giving us so much, Brian! You're a wonderful person.
