

Donald A. Hughes, Jr., age 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 8, 2025, after bravely fighting pancreatic cancer. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s School in Miami, FL, attended the University of Florida and graduated from the University of Miami after serving in the Korean War. He retired from New York Life Insurance Company after a successful career spanning over 60 years. Don was an avid fisherman and carried that love into exquisite wood carvings of saltwater fish and paintings of ocean activities, coastal scenes, and landscapes. He served his community as a board member of the Village of Saratoga Homeowners Association for over 20 years and was a Citizen on Patrol member, recognized as the Top C.O.P. in 2002. A lifelong devout Catholic, Don supported St. John Fisher and Mary Immaculate Catholic Churches with faithful tithing and hours on the financial committees.
Don’s greatest accomplishment was his five children who were at his bedside as he made his final journey home. Michael Hughes (Julie), Anne Arbogast (Jim), Mary Hughes, Catherine Merten (Dennis) and Stephen Hughes (Tiffany) as well as seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald A. Hughes, Sr. and Catherine C. Hughes and his sister, Mary Maclure. He is survived by a sister, Anne Warren (Andy) of Southern Pines, NC. The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 5411 Okeechobee Blvd., WPB on Monday, May 19 from 5-7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St John Fisher Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 20 at 11:30 a.m. followed by a private interment at the South Florida National Cemetery. The family is incredibly grateful for the care provided by Morse Life Hospice team as well as his caregivers Izzy, Vicky and Lefrance.
