He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rita McGrath of Jupiter, daughter Carol of North Palm Beach, son James (Jennifer) of Tequesta, son Michael of Jupiter, daughter-in-law Victoria McGrath of Jupiter, and grandchildren, James III, Julia, and Lilly.
An alumn of Rutgers University, he also studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern University. He served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant July, 1943 to January, 1945. He received the Victory Ribbon for service in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He worked for Socony Mobil Oil Company 1948-1959 in Venezuela and New York City. He had a successful investment career for decades in New York and Florida.
He was an avid runner who completed four marathons while in his sixties. During his last road race, he earned a second place trophy for the 80-84 age group. He swam in college, holding the pool record at Penn for the 100 meter butterfly.
A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, December 2 at 9:00AM at St. Patrick's Church, 13591 Prosperity Farms Road, Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
