Laurie earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati. She later met the love of her life, James N. Bay, the owner of Bays English Muffins. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in devotion to one another, their family, and to the communities they called home. Laurie and Jim made their home in Chicago and in Palm Beach.
Laurie moved through the world with quiet grace. She was considerate, kind and remarkably insightful and gracious. Her generosity was understated, and reflected the very essence of Christian outreach.
Those fortunate enough to know her well treasured her warmth, her wisdom, and the steady loving presence she brought to everything she engaged in.
Music was a passion and a bond she shared with Jim; something woven into the home they found in Palm Beach and personified at the Palm Beach Symphony.
She was a devoted member of the Palm Beach Symphony Board of Directors, and a cherished member of its Ladies Guild.
Her thoughtfulness, elegance, and passion for the music she adored left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Laurie’s belief in the Symphony's mission will continue to resonate in every note played on its stage.
Laurie and Jim shared a deep belief in the importance of supporting community, and together they became devoted philanthropists in both Chicago and Palm Beach, serving on the boards of numerous hospital and arts organizations.
Among the many institutions they championed were the Art Institute of Chicago, where they were the lead donors of the Neapolitan Crèche; the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, home to the James N. and Laurie V. Bay Retina Research Program; the Lyric Opera of Chicago; The Antiquarian Society; and the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. Laurie also served as past President of the Woman's Board of the Alliance Française de Chicago, where her leadership helped strengthen governance and fundraising and culminated in the celebrated 2016 Les Années Folles gala. She was also a dedicated supporter of the Breakthrough Board, and together with Jim was an active participant in the American Friends of Versailles, helping to restore several of the historic gardens of Versailles.
Faith was a steady presence in Laurie's life. She was devoted to The Basilica of Saint Edward in Palm Beach, an active supporter of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach, and a valued member of the Caritas Dei Bishop's Gala committee.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim, and survived by their son, Grant, sisters Amy Horst, Julie Blanchard and Sally Wood as well as treasured nieces and nephews.
Laurie's grace, her quiet generosity, and the gentle way she made those around her feel seen and valued, will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
A service celebrating Laurie's life will be held at The Basilica of Saint Edward in Palm Beach on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Visitation at 9:30am followed by service at 10am. Rev. Archimandrite Glen J. Pothier will be the celebrant. She will rest alongside her beloved husband and parents at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in West Palm Beach.
