Stanley Arnold Peterson, age 96, of West Palm Beach, passed away peacefully May 9 at the VA Hospice. Stan was born in Truman, Minnesota to Ole and Ella Peterson. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1941 and served as a Lieutenant in 96th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force as a navigator on a B-17, successfully completing his 25 missions. He thankfully survived his B-17 being shot up on a 1943 New Years Eve bomb run to Paris, and the first daylight bombing run to Berlin. He was awarded several commendations for his service, including The Distinguished Flying Cross and The French Legion of Honor.
He returned home to finish his college career in 1945 at St. Olaf College, where he met Lois (Evensen) Peterson, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage, until her passing in 2009. Lois and Stan lived in the Chicago area for 30 years, where Stan was a stock broker. They then moved to Wellington in 1982 to be near their daughters, where they had resided since. Stan was a member of The Old Guard Society of Golfers, The Beach Club, Mayacoo Lakes CC, and The Union League Club of Chicago, as well as being a proud member of the VFW, Masons and a Shriner.
Stan is survived by his daughters Nancy Severson (John) and Cathy Duncan (Doug), both of West Palm Beach; grandchildren, Andrew Severson, Eric Severson (Carrie), David Duncan (Dayna), Carrie Duncan Crozier (Page), Craig Severson, and Amy Severson Rohman (John), as well as six great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the very caring people who tended to Stan's needs in such a loving and compassionate way in his final days at the VA Hospice center. They are truly wonderful individuals!
A Celebration of Life will take place at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 5411 Okeechobee Blvd, WPB, at 4 PM, May 13. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choosing.
