Clyde Casper Nielsen peacefully returned to Heavenly Father and his beloved Verla on May 6, 2024, in Cedar City, Utah at the age of 92. He was born September 18, 1931, in Hyrum, Utah to Harriet Casper Marchant and Bendt Lewis Nielsen.
He grew up on the family farm in Hyrum, graduating from South Cache. Clyde was sealed to his sweetheart Verla Jean Swapp in the Logan Utah Temple on June 30, 1953, and was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many stake and ward callings. He served faithfully as a Stake Patriarch for many years. Clyde will always be remembered for the intelligence, gentleness, patience, and grace that he carried in any situation.
Clyde graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. He worked at Hercules as a computer engineer and was a pioneer in his field. Even in retirement, Clyde liked to play with technology, much to the chagrin of his wife at times. He turned an antique radio into a smart device by putting an Amazon Echo inside.
Along with his wife, Clyde lived a life dedicated to serving and ministering. Their home was always open to people who needed extra support. He and Verla provided a home for 3 foster children as part of the Indian Placement Program, several unwed mothers, and other people in need. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, from assisting on the farm to cleaning the church and temple (when he was 92 years old). With so much kindhearted help happening, the family always let him rest when he dozed off sitting up.
Clyde loved his country and was a proud Air Force veteran. He loved to attend the Veterans Day program offered by Cedar City’s amazing Masters Singers and the 4th of July program presented by the Cedar City Interfaith Alliance at the Catholic Church. He would stand proudly as the Air Force song was sung and honored the other branches of the Armed Forces with enthusiastic applause.
Clyde and Verla served a church mission in Huntsville, Texas, as well as several in Salt Lake City, and worked as temple ordinance workers for many years. More recently Clyde served as a Recommend Desk Attendant in the Cedar City Temple. He also served as a ward missionary in Cedar City, visiting most of the members of the Beacon Hill Ward.
Clyde kept the curls in his hair by always eating the burnt toast. He never complained and always had a kind demeanor no matter what situation he was presented with. He would listen to family members, offering words of advice when needed and comfort when that was preferred. He always had a warm enveloping hug ready, and the little kids always got to sit snuggled up in his lap.
Clyde is survived by his children Jeanette (David) Lund, Mary Nielsen (Alan Hamilton), Hugh (Carol) Nielsen, Brent Nielsen, and his sister Roma (Kent) Henderson. In addition to his children, he is survived by 12 grandchildren and their spouses, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife (Verla), his parents (Harriet and Bendt Nielsen), brothers (Lewis and Leon Nielsen), and great-granddaughter (Savanna Peterson).
The family would like to thank Rosa Risney for her friendship and loving care of Clyde through his last 2 years.
