Bryan Huddleston, 74, died unexpectedly of complications from diabetes on February 27, 2021, surrounded by family. He was born in 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Raymond William Huddleston and Nancy Jeneva Simonette. His parents died when he was young, and his eldest sister, June, raised him. As a teenager, Bryan lived in South Carolina and California, where he graduated from Morris High School in 1964. He converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1971. Bryan served in many ward and stake positions, and especially enjoyed his time as a service missionary in the Salt Lake City Inner City mission, and as a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple.
Bryan married Donna Humphrey on July 8, 1967, and the couple had three children together-- Michael, Jennifer, and Jessica. They later divorced.
Bryan met Janice Bills Shank at a young single adult activity in San Diego, California, in 1979. The couple was married three months later, on December 8, in the Los Angeles Temple. Joining Janice’s two children from her first marriage, John and Erick, the couple had three more children-- Joshua, Christopher, and Julia.
Bryan was an avid sports fan and loved to watch the Utah Jazz and New York Yankees every chance he got. He enjoyed watching reruns of his favorite games, joking that he liked knowing how the game was going to turn out. He instilled this love of sports in his youngest children by taking them to Little League baseball games and quizzing them about old sports statistics around the dinner table. To this day, the kids can name the greatest Yankees players across the decades.
Bryan also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending time with his dogs. His gardens were always overambitious, but he enjoyed planning and preparing the soil as much as he did tending to the fruits and vegetables. Bryan formed close friendships with his neighbors, and served on the “neighborhood annoyance committee” with his friend Jay. Together they walked around the neighborhood mowing lawns, taking out trash cans, and helping how they could.
He is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Janice, his sister Debbie Humphrey, his sister-in-law Mary Huddleston, and his children, Mike (Mimi), Jennifer (Walt), Jessica (Kevin), John, Erick, Josh (Anna), Chris (Kristie), and Julia (Daniel), and nineteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Nancy, his sister Nancy June Thomas, his brother Larry Huddleston, and his beloved dogs Meschack and Beeker.
Private services will be held Saturday, March 6, 2021. He is interred at Valley View Memorial Park.
The family wishes to thank the kindness and compassion of the staff of the Cardiac ICU at Intermountain Hospital, especially Taylor Twitchell, Dr. Kent Meredith, and Bryan’s nurses, David and Eli. Memorial contributions may be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
