Gerrit Charles Peterson, age 85, passed away surrounded by loved ones on September 19, 2021 in South Jordan, Utah. He was born January 7, 1936 in Milburn, Utah (Sanpete County), to Golden Peterson and Mabel Mower Peterson. He graduated from Cyprus High School.
Gerrit spoke fondly about his childhood spent riding horses and sledding in the valleys and mountains of Fairview. Eventually Gerrit’s parents relocated with their seven children and entire house to Magna, Utah.
Gerrit fell in love with Winona Clement and they were married on May 25, 1954. He was 18 and she was 16. Together they raised three children in West Valley City, Utah. Gerrit and Winona had many adventures together, including traveling to much of the United States, Europe, and Argentina. They kept a beautiful and immaculate yard and home. Gerrit and Winona recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in May.
Gerrit had countless hobbies in his lifetime. He loved quarter horses and took up cutter racing. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed trips to the Manti La Sal Mountains with his nephews and brother to hunt deer. Gerrit made annual trips to South Dakota to hunt pheasants, and Arizona to hunt doves. In more recent years, he enjoyed fishing in the Uinta and Wasatch Mountains.
Gerrit adored his grandkids and great grandkids. Gerrit was loved by his neighbors and friends. He could talk to anyone and made new friends everywhere he went.
Gerrit is survived by his wife, Winona Peterson; his children Patti (Glen) Frantz, Gerrit (Georgia) Peterson, and Darren (Maria) Peterson; sister, Rhonda Lee; 10 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Gerrit is preceded in death by his parents, Golden and Mabel Peterson; sisters, Alene and Colleen; and brothers, Glade, Cloyd, and Nyle.
Gerrit had a deep love for his dogs, so in lieu of flowers, please donate to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary or ASPCA.
