Hoang worked for the State of Transportation in South Vietnam, a career that reflected his commitment to ensuring others had a path forward. In search of a better future for his family, he came to the United States as a refugee on February 27, 1980. Grateful for the opportunities this country provided, he became a U.S. citizen in 1985. His love for America was so deep that when finalizing his paperwork, he chose February 20th as his official birthdate honoring Presidents' Day and the country that had given him and his family a new beginning.
Generosity was the cornerstone of Hoang’s life. He dedicated countless hours to volunteering with the Vietnamese community of Northern Utah, bringing people together and creating a space of belonging for all. His love for music and dancing was at the heart of these gatherings. Whether it was offering a helping hand, ensuring others were comfortable before himself, or simply sharing a warm smile, he gave of himself completely.
His heart belonged to his wife, Tuoi Thi Vo, whom he married in 1955 after tirelessly winning her affection. Ever the romantic, he honored their love by taking her name as his middle name, one of many gestures that showcased his devotion.
His greatest joy was his family. He and his wife raised seven children and embraced several children they welcomed as their own, each of whom still calls him "Dad" to this day. Yet, it was his grandchildren who were the light of his life. A firm believer in education, he encouraged them to excel, always reminding them of their potential. He documented their lives in photographs, capturing every cherished moment and milestone.
To his family, he was the gold standard of what it meant to be a grandfather, the best example of unwavering love. His famous “Grandpa kisses” will be missed forever, but his love never leaves room for doubt; it was constant, pure, and unconditional.
Hoang's legacy is one of kindness, sacrifice, and boundless generosity. The time, love, and heart he gave to those around him was limitless. Though he is no longer physically with us, the impact of his love and selflessness will live on in the lives he touched.
Rest in love, Grandpa. We will honor you always.
