She was a city girl until she met the love of her life, Theron “Duane” Chatwin, when she was 13 years old. She soon learned to enjoy the country life. They were married and sealed together for time and all eternity on June 20, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married 51 years until his death. Their life was a love story and they worked tirelessly to create a wonderful life for their family. They made their home in Granger, Utah in 1961 where they raised their two children, Dorie LaVinia and Duane Theron Chatwin. She was a very loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Joan was so proud to have graduated from West High School. She knew her politics and was happy to vote in every election. Joan loved spending time camping with family, riding horses, sewing, crocheting, and completing word searches. She had a great love and knowledge of old time movies, especially westerns and John Wayne. Joan and Duane loved to listen to music together and her favorite singer was Jim Reeves. Joan loved her family and would always hope for the best for them. She was happy to put everyone else first. Joan believed that children are a blessing from God and loved to give the neighborhood children bags of goodies on the holidays. Joan was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had unwavering faith and testimony. Joan also held many positions within the Church throughout her life. She was involved in the PTA when her children were in school. Joan loved the holidays, especially Christmas and all her wonderful decorations. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Dorie (Boyd) Olson; daughter-in-law, Shelly Chatwin; three grandchildren, Dee, Natasha, and Phillip; a granddaughter-in-law, Penny; two great-grandchildren, Millie and Theron; and many nieces and nephews.
