Our precious husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Lyle (Jim) James Maynard passed away on Pioneer Day, July 24, 2024 in West Valley City, Utah. He was born in Arco, Idaho on November 19, 1938, and is the oldest son of Cecil James Maynard and LaNell Rothwell Maynard. He was the world’s best brother to Kay Leon Maynard and Sally Maynard Dietlein.
Lyle’s mother was an excellent seamstress and surprised everyone when she made a tiny pair of overalls for him to wear. In those days, most boy toddlers only wore dresses. He became a fashion trendsetter at a very young age. As a teen, he was known for the bow ties he wore on his mission, and later, for his joyful and bright collection of ties. He was always handsome.
Most of his childhood was spent in Springville, Utah. Lyle loved making and fixing things. He loved the woodshop classes he took at Springville High School. He loved acting in plays, participating in sports, and playing the guitar and ukulele. He adored Elvis Presley and loved imitating him. He also enjoyed tending to his beautiful garden where he grew glorious flowers and heavenly tomatoes.
Lyle served many missions in life. He served a mission in the Hawaiian Islands for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and was there when Hawaii was made the 50th state. He served his country in the Army Reserve for eight and a half years from 1957-1965, and he later served two more missions with his beloved wife, Jackie, in the Anaheim, California Mission and the Peoria, Illinois Mission.
He met Jacqueline Kauilani Kalama at Brigham Young University when he returned from his mission in Hawaii. Her exquisite voice and beautiful Hawaiian dancing swept him away, and they were married on March 4, 1962. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on May 27, 1963. Together they have three exceptional children - Synthia Ann, NaLani LaNell, and Michael James.
Lyle loved learning. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in math and education from the University of Utah, and came very close to earning his doctorate. Lyle taught math and driver’s education for 30+ years at both Cyprus and Kearns High School. He often said that he hoped he had saved lives by teaching driver’s ed. To support his love for teaching, he always worked at least two jobs. He worked at Hercules for 20 years and also sold real estate.
Lyle loved to study the scriptures and understood them well. He taught the youth in Sunday School for years. His testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ, was bright and strong. He cherished his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and knew it was true.
Lyle James Maynard is survived by his wife, Jacqueline (Jackie) Kauilani Kalama, daughters Synthia Ann Lambert (Frederick) and NaLani LaNell Holt (Richard), and son, Michael James Maynard (Julianna). He is also survived by his brother, Kay Leon Maynard, and his sister, Sally Maynard Dietlein. He has 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil James and LaNell Rothwell Maynard, and his infant sister, Marcia Ann Maynard.
