It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Mark Allan Tyson, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend on March 12, 2025, at the age of 70 of natural causes. He left behind an unfailing legacy of love, selfless service, and unwavering devotion to God and his fellow man.
Born on June 20, 1954, to Ross and Coy Tyson in Idaho Falls, ID, Mark was the fourth of five children. He was responsible for giving his parents many gray hairs and loved torturing his sisters—a mischievous streak that would stay with him throughout his life. The family settled in Bountiful, Utah, where Mark spent much of his time riding his horse in the hills near his house. He was known for his adventurous spirit, whether it was driving his car with boxing gloves on, skipping school to go skiing with his friends Kevin and Spence or selling rides on his horse for 25 cents to buy himself a hamburger at Pace’s Dairy Ann.
Mark served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Bogotá, Colombia, which solidified his testimony of Jesus Christ. Upon his return, he met Sandra Ord, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on November 17, 1976. He built their first home soon thereafter in West Valley City, UT.
Mark was always skilled with his hands and chose to build his career in construction as a contractor. With his blood, sweat, and tears, Mark built and grew his own business, Wasatch Mountain Contracting. He loved working with employees from all walks of life, offering many a helping hand when they were down on their luck and giving them a step up. He also supported countless future missionaries saving for their missions. Yet, his favorite way to introduce himself was always with a smile, saying, “I haul trash.''. In reality, many were blessed by Mark’s willingness to haul away anything for them, always with his trusty, well-worn truck and trailer. He was a simple, no-frills man who spent his life working hard with his hands and heart, also becoming a builder of men. His life was one of humility, kindness, cheerfulness, and boundless generosity, as he put others before himself at every opportunity, always having time for everyone.
In his self-deprecating style, Mark was always eager to share stories about something funny that happened to him, an interesting tidbit, or a spiritual experience—always followed by, 'I’ve got one more story for you…' which typically turned into three or four more. He loved joking about himself, his mishaps, and his shenanigans, leaving people never quite sure whether he was telling the truth or just spinning a good tale.
Known for his unwavering faith, Mark served God and his fellow men with a heart full of compassion. He had no care for material possessions or status—his joy came from serving those around him. Whether through quiet acts of kindness or by offering his time and talents, he left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. He truly taught us all what it means to live the 2nd commandment.
As a faithful member of his church, Mark always magnified every calling he received, but he had a special love for serving with the youth, and those with special needs. Sandy would always say he was among ‘his peers.’ He taught with all his heart, leading more by example than by words, and he even tried to obey the rules—most of the time. Most recently, Mark has been serving as a Service Missionary for Deseret Manufacturing and as a Temple Ordinance worker. Both brought him enormous joy and satisfaction knowing he was helping build the Kingdom of God.
He leaves behind for a time, his eternal companion, Sandy, his loving children, and beloved grandchildren: Jared and Leslie - Sam, Ella, Jack, Annie, and Mia; Tyler and Lauri - Emma, Mya, Brig, Davis, and Kate; Karli and Joe - Cannon, Crosby, Blair, Milo, and Cooper, who were the light of his life, and also so many that he considered family whose lives were touched by his selfless life.
Mark was greeted in Heaven by his daughter, Angela, his parents, his brother, Bruce, and his much-loved nephew, Matt, all eagerly waiting to see him and to hear his latest joke and ‘one more story’. He was also reunited with his beloved horses, Star, Sadie, and Sage, along with his loyal riding companions: Hunter, Maggie, and Zoe. He joins many other friends, former employees, extended family, and even strangers he met once and immediately considered his best friends—each of whom he loved and cared for as if they were his own.
Mark’s physical body will be laid to rest in his hometown of Bountiful, Utah. Though his spirit has been 'taken home to that God who gave him life,' we believe he will continue his selfless service to all of us, just in a more expanded way.
Mark was never one to seek attention or accolades; his only interest was in doing good and following the example of Christ. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched with his goodness, sincerity, and quiet strength. As we reflect on his life, we’ve concluded that the world could use more Mark Tysons.
