Mary Speirs-Hanni was born on December 24th, 1957, along with her twin sister, Carol. She passed away on July 8th, 2023, due to complications from Alzheimer’s. She was born and raised in Magna, Utah along with her 7 brothers and 4 sisters. Beginning in childhood, Mary was a strong-minded feminist and insisted she be treated as an equal to men. She argued that if her brothers be shirtless while playing outside then so could she and would often threaten to “burn her bra” to fight these kinds of inequalities. This same warrior mentality was brought out many times throughout her life when she fought for people she cared about and even those she didn’t know. Her strength was exemplary to others and one of her many admired traits.
Mary worked at UPS for almost 30 years where her spirited personality made it very easy for her to create lifelong friendships. Outside of work she enjoyed talking on the phone for hours with family and friends. Mary will be remembered for her fun sense of humor, infectious laugh, and being a crazy grandma. She loved bringing the family together to celebrate her Christmas Eve birthday each year where holiday baking with Danish cookies and Santa Claus were sure to bring the magic of Christmas alive to all who came. “It’s tradition” she would say and spared no expense.
During her free time, Mary enjoyed dancing, working out and playing the piano. “You gotta keep moving” was a common phrase she would use and took quite seriously. Whether running around the house, riding the bike, doing Gilad VHS tapes, or qigong and yoga later in life, she knew the key to staying young was to stay on the go. When it came time to ground herself, though, she loved connecting with Mother Nature in her own backyard where she welcomed the company of birds and dragonflies. She found a similar feeling when stepping into the ocean at California and vacationed there as often as time allowed.
Mary was a great friend to many people and will be missed by all who knew her. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is now at peace and reunited with loved ones who have passed before her. She is most remembered for being a fierce wife, mom, grandma, sister and friend.
She is survived by her husband Gary and children Nicole (Jesus), Dusty (Keli), Brooke (Will), and Mikel. She was also blessed with 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren: Marisa, Jesse, Sophie, Malia, Izaiah, Mya, Gannon, Lyrik, Crew, Richy, Morgan, Maeve, and Clementine. But most importantly, Mary’s legacy is survived by all the lives she inspired to have strength in darkness and fun in the light.
A viewing will take place at Valley View Funeral Home from 10:00-11:30am on July 22nd, 2023, followed by a funeral service at 12pm. A celebration of life will be held after the services conclude at Hidden Garden Weddings and Events from 1:00-6:00pm.
