‘Sadie’
In loving memory we acknowledge as a family the passing of our loving Father, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa Orvil LaVell Sadler. Affectionately known as “Sadie.” He parted in peace from this mortal existence on August 17, 2010, at the age of 87, to return to his Heavenly Parents.
LaVell was born October 10, 1922, in Magna, Utah, to Leslie Dare and Amelia Hardman Sadler. He lived there most of his life. He served his country during WWII as a United States Navy Plane Captain in the Pacific Theater. He met Joey Howarth and they married in the Salt Lake Temple for time and eternity. Joey preceded him in death in 2005 after 57 years of marriage. With his wife they raised 12 children. Among many accomplishments they received their MM & Gleaner Awards, served a Stake Mission, and served a 20 year mission in the Church Museum. Dad loved scouting. He felt that it was a way to get the priesthood into the boy. At the end of his service to scouting he was the recipient of the distinguished service award – The Silver Beaver.
LaVell attended the University of Utah and the Salt Lake City Community College where he received his Design Engineer Degree. LaVell retired from Kennecott Copper after 42 years and returned to his favorite hobby, his work shop. While there he created many fun memories and toys like stilts, swords and guns for his children and grandchildren to play with. In his later years he took art classes and became an accomplished painter. Writing his family history was a fulfillment of a heartfelt desire he had had for many years.
Their 12 children: Paul (Pam) Sadler, David (Quay) Sadler, Carrie Sadler Cummings, Beth Sadler Powers, Bud (Kathie) Sadler, Ellen Sadler Sabo, Rachel (Don) Wilson, April (Kevin) Hancock, Lanai (Chuck) Canfield, Mildred (Craig) Sollis, Sarah (Gary) Higbee, and Rebecca (Ron) Cordova. With 45 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. He joins his wife and daughter Millie Sollis, who also preceded him in death
LaVell had a great love of the gospel which guided his moral compass. He believed the temple was the beginning not the end. He wanted his family to understand the importance of repentance and to have their lives in order with the "Plan of Salvation."
His favorite quote from President Brigham Young was, "If you hear I am gone before we meet again, say Hallelujah!" And we rejoice this day and say “Hallelujah!”
Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Spencer 6th Ward House, 8180 West 3320 South. The family will receive friends and relatives at a viewing Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Spencer 6th Ward House, and one hour prior to the services at the Ward House. Interment: Valley View Memorial Park where graveside ceremony will include Military Honors.
Many thanks to those at the V.A. Hospital and Sally Loken who addressed our Dad's needs, and special thanks to The "Inspiration Hospice" team for their services, especially Marissa and Jodie.
