She was born in Logan, Utah on May 27, 1925, and was raised in Provo, Utah. Her father, Aura Charles Hatch, was Mayor of Provo and Owner/Director of Aura C. Hatch Mortuary. Her mother, Mary Fuhriman Hatch, was his assistant and capable home manager. Her sister, Maryana, was born in 1941. Patricia liked to joke that as she grew up in a mortuary, there was not much that scared her. And that is how she lived her life—without fear and a superb, matter-of-fact outlook that rubbed off on her family, friends and acquaintances.
After running for and serving in student government at the various schools she attended, she achieved her bachelor’s degree in Political Science at her beloved Utah State University. She enjoyed being an Aggie and was a member of their Alumni Association. USU is also where she met the love of her life, Alma Ballantyne Sonne, a Loganite who had just returned from WWII having survived the battle of Iwo Jima as a Marine captain. They married in Provo on December 28, 1946, and had two children, Robert Hatch Sonne in 1949 and Jacqueline Sonne Liddle Shelline five years later.
Patricia was always proud of being a career woman. In high school, she worked at the Academy Theater and Columbia Steel in Provo. After she and Alma married, they resided in Malad, Idaho, then Ely, Nevada, and finally settled in Whittier, California. During her marriage, she worked for Idaho and Nevada State Social Services, Murphy Hospital, South Whittier Library and finally Chevron Oil Field Research in Whittier and La Habra, California. She started out as a stenographer for Chevron and eventually rose to become the head office manager in the Human Relations Division of their La Habra Office. She also was a staunch Republican and served in many capacities as a Republican supporter.
An avid hobbyist, Patricia became proficient in knitting, writing, crafting and especially quilting, creating hand-quilted art in the form of baby quilts, gifting approximately 300 over the years to family and friends.
She and Al had a wonderful married life, full of mutual adoration, political arguments, laughter, unified parenting, travel, and service for various organizations, including the LDS church. Errant Mormons in college, they eventually became activated and were sealed to each other and their children in the Los Angeles Temple in 1964. Patricia served in many auxiliaries of the church and supported Al in his priesthood service, lending her expertise to the LDS wards where they lived over the years.
Alma predeceased Patricia on December 15, 2008, and her sister Maryana Hatch Dunning (Tom) died on February 7, 2012. Patricia is survived by her son Robert (ex-wives, Teri Watson and Robin Hubert), grandchildren: Jacob Sonne, Jessica Sims (John), and Jenae Nico (Damian), her daughter Jackie Shelline (Mark), grandchildren: Colin Liddle, Emily Swick (Jesse), Evan Shelline (Lauren), David Shelline, Heidi Shelline, Heather Decker (Alex) and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Patricia’s childhood in a mortuary had her experiencing enough funerals to last two lifetimes, so she opted instead for a simple graveside service. It will be held at the cemetery in Franklin, Idaho on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 12:00 noon, where she will be interred next to her beloved Al.
