1942–2025
Richard Gordon Neumann, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2025, due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.
Dick was born on February 15, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Hermann Neumann and Elsa Feil. The second of four boys, he grew up proud of his German heritage and traditions. He graduated from West High School in 1960, then earned a bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of Utah.
From a young age, Dick was dedicated to service. He joined the Navy Reserve while in high school and later served on active duty from 1961 to 1963. Even during his service, his faith remained central. He attended church faithfully while stationed away and baptized two fellow sailors. Over the years, Dick held several callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including in the bishopric and temple service, but his greatest joy was mentoring the Young Men.
Dick met Patricia Robinson at a church dance, and the two married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 11, 1964. Together they built a life centered on family, raising five children. He loved creating traditions—especially at Christmas, when German treats, surprises, and gifts filled the home. Another tradition was watching the evening news with a big bowl of ice cream, never missing a weather report.
Dick was a hard worker with a strong sense of dedication. He worked as a truck driver, started a side landscaping business, and with his wife, ushered at University of Utah events for more than 40 years. A true Utes fan, he loved being part of the game-day atmosphere. Beyond his work ethic, Dick was known for his knack for gab—he could strike up a conversation with anyone, and his love of reading the daily newspaper and keeping up on current events meant he always had something interesting to share.
One of Dick’s lifelong dreams was to own a boat. He and his dear friend, Ron Muir, purchased their first one together, later each getting their own, which led to countless family adventures on the water. Annual trips to Lake Powell became a cherished tradition, where he waterskied well into his seventies and created memories his children and grandchildren will never forget.
Dick is survived by his wife Patricia, their five children Shaun (Brenda), Lori (Scott) North, Brooke, Travis (Jessica), and Tyra, as well as nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren with another on the way, and his loyal dog Moki. He is also survived by his brother Dennis (Carol), along with so many other relatives who cherished him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Ralph and Marvin.
Funeral services will be held at the LDS Chapel at 5000 West Pavant Avenue in West Valley City, Utah, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. Viewings will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Valley View Funeral Home at 4335 West 4100 South in West Valley City, Utah and an hour prior to funeral services at the LDS Chapel. Interment will follow at Valley View Memorial Park (west of the funeral home).
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Legacy House in Bountiful, Utah, and to Valeo Hospice for their care and compassion.
