1941 – 2022
Robert H. Hermansen, Sr. passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 22, 2022 in South Jordan, Utah despite courageously battling with Parkinson’s Disease, asthma, dementia, arthritic bones, and more. He was born May 30, 1941 in Caliente, Nevada to Royce Deray and Grace Hendricks Hermansen.
Due to Perthes disease affecting his hips, young Rob spent four years at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, being released to go home just before his ninth birthday. Such challenges throughout his life resulted in three double hip replacement surgeries, multiple back and neck surgeries, and frequent joint pain that he endured with admirable bravery.
When his family moved to Payson, he met the love of his life, Lynda Ashby, and married her before both graduated from high school. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised six children. Teaching his children to work hard, have fun along the way, and stay close to each other is his most enduring legacy. Whether hosting the neighborhood’s largest firework show on Pioneer Day, passing out money eggs to the kids and grandkids on Easter, or being the best decorated Christmas light house on the block, Rob’s love of family get-togethers and holidays was clear. He especially loved Christmas, complete with Christmas trains and noisy holiday toys, a rotating Christmas tree in the front room, and a giant stocking filled with surprises on Christmas Eve. He also treasured family time camping at Cherry Hill, cruising to Alaska, Hawaii, or the Caribbean, or taking a grandkid to lunch on their birthday.
Rob graduated with his Associates Degree in Computer Science from what is now Salt Lake Community College. He worked for many years as a buyer in retail for Grand Central, with later years working at Hercules and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rob served others in so many ways, including being in the branch presidency of a half-way house, as a senior couple missionary, and as a worker in the Jordan River Temple.
Rob was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mardene Nelson; brothers-in-law Doug Nelson, Kent Oborn, Darrell Ashby; daughter Kathy Pratt; grandson Brett Beacham. He is survived by Lynda, his wife of 63 years; children Lynette Pomrenke, Don Pratt (son-in-law), Vicky (Layne) Beacham, Robert (Cindy) Hermansen, Steve (Jodi) Hermansen, Karyn (Mike) Winder; siblings Larry (Carolyn) Hermansen, Lyn Nell Petersen, Sharyl Oborn, DeRay (Shauna) Hermansen; in-law siblings Dwayne (Becky) Ashby, Marilyn Sunderland; 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
