

Robert Wright, born on November 23, 1925, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on October 24, 2025, at the age of 99 in West Valley City, Utah. He lived a long and remarkable life, touching the hearts of all those who knew him. Robert will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends. His legacy lives on through the stories he shared, the guidance he offered, and the joy he brought to every gathering.
Robert was a proud graduate of Douglas High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Langston Hughes College. His commitment to education and self-growth is a value he has ingrained in his family.
Robert served his country with honor during World War II as a Naval Coxswain. His time in the service instilled in him a profound sense of duty, resilience, and camaraderie—qualities that remained with him throughout his life and inspired those around him. Robert spent several years as a US Postal Clerk before becoming a Housing Appraiser for the Federal Government. In each role, he was recognized for his diligence, fairness, and integrity.
Robert’s passions extended well beyond his professional life. He was deeply involved in several organizations, serving as a Past Master of High Marine Lodge #12 and was coronated as Sovereign Grand Inspector General, and 33° Scottish Rite Mason. He was a dedicated member of the Golden Circle, Shriners and Past Worthy Patron of the Eastern Stars. He also served as a Deacon at New Pilgrim Baptist Church, a Senior Usher for St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, and a Scout Leader. Robert enjoyed activities such as bowling, golfing, billiards, fishing, reading history, and sharing the stories and lessons of his own remarkable journey with younger generations. One of his loves, was a bingo caller for the Catholic Church.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Gloria Gonzales and Griscell, MA of Granger Medical and First Choice Home Health and Hospice for the compassionate care and support they provided. A special thank you is reserved for Tucker, Austin, and April, whose kindness, professionalism, and gentle presence made a profound difference during Robert’s final days. Their dedication brought comfort and peace to Robert and his loved ones, and their efforts will always be remembered with deep appreciation.
Robert was preceded in death by his son, Robert Sequoyah Wright, and grandson, Justin Raso. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Illa Wright, and his cherished children: Michael Demetrius Wright (Barbara, deceased), Barbara Jean Fields (Rev. Harold), Leslee Ann Spainhower (Paul), Yvonne Wright, and Gregory Wright. Grandchildren: LaShell Robinson (Randall), Brittnee Kennedy (Christopher), Ozsie Fields, Barbara Garvin, Steele Luke Wright. Great Grandchildren: Jordan Robinson, Makayla Robinson, Ivy Kennedy, Isaac Kennedy, Iris Kennedy, Naomi Fields, Nehemiah Garvin, and Nova Jean Humphries. He is also survived by James Carter of Dallas, Texas, Maetta Brown and Hattie Carter of Lockhart, Texas, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends who were touched by his generosity and spirit.

A funeral service will be held to celebrate Robert’s life on November 8, 2025, at Unity Baptist Church, 1170 West 1000 North, Salt Lake City, UT 84116.
Viewing: 11:00- 12:00 pm.
Service: 12:00-1:00 pm.
Interment: Valley View Memorial Park, 4400 West 4100 South, please enter the cemetery located West of the Funeral Home.
Repass: 2:30 pm, Unity Baptist Church, 1170 West 1000 North, Salt Lake City, UT 84116.
