Mark was the oldest son of David and Trevelene Hall, from Vernal, Utah. Mark was born in San Bernardino, California, and lived in Waco, Texas, Provo, Utah, Sacramento, California, and K.I. Sawyer Military Base, in Michigan. At the age of 17 he drove a Ford Model A back to Vernal, Utah – at 45 m.p.h. - with his younger brother. Shortly after arriving in Vernal, Mark left home and attended college and served an LDS mission in France and Switzerland.
Mark was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971. After his service he went on to obtain an MBA and worked in San Francisco for the Securities and Exchange Commission before returning to Utah where he worked in title insurance for many years.
Mark deeply loved the outdoors and spent endless weeks hiking with his siblings and kids in the Uinta Mountains, biking in Southeast Utah, and running rivers all over the west. He summited Mt. Elbrus, Cerro Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, the Eiger, and, of course, he summited King’s Peak in Utah dozens of times. He ran the Wasatch Front 100 and competed in triathlons.
In addition to his love of the outdoors he had a sharp mind for pointless trivia and encouraged his kids to flash multiple decks of cards to him while driving and test his ability to memorize the order. He was a voracious reader and collected books and magazines throughout his life. He never occupied a bedroom that didn’t have more space dedicated to reading material than it did to sleeping.
Mark used to sing “We Gotta Get out of This Place” by the Animals so much while hiking his kids would laugh and tell him to stop. He loved Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, and any other 60’s rock. When his oldest son was in the Missionary Training Center (MTC) Mark invented a doctor’s appointment and picked his son up with a change of clothes and tickets to AC/DC.
Mark enjoyed travel and visiting new places. He implemented a “no chain restaurants on a road trip” rule roughly 30 years ago, and to our knowledge he never broke it.
Mark is survived by his wife Diana, his siblings, Evan, Larry, Lisa, Jed, and Mary, and his 5 children, Quinn, Jordan, Tamar, Morgan, and Logan and 12 grandchildren.
