USS SC-156, Helmsman & Navigator, May 1943 – April 1944; Perth/Fremantle defensive perimeter operations

USS Ozark (LSV-2), Plank Owner, Helmsman & Navigator, April 1944 – Oct 1945; Invasions: Luzon, Iwo Jima, Okinawa; Landing of first occupation forces in Japan at Yokosuka, Japan (Aug. 30, 1945).

Gene and Bettie have been family friends since my early childhood. My brother and I were just two of the many kids they opened their home to as caregivers. Indeed, we felt like part of their family. I will never forget Gene's gentle and kind nature. He will be fondly remembered and missed.

Gene and Bettie have been our neighbors since they moved into Leisure World. Gene was loved by all the neighbors. Our dog Lizzie was always running up to him to be petted, he obliged. Gene was soft spoken and always had a smile.We will miss Gene tremendously and our hearts and prayers go out to Bettie and their daughter and son.

Gene was a good friend to my folks and me and will be missed very much.
I had the pleasure of his company at church, "band in the park", breakfast
at Polly's, and most recently, Thanksgiving Dinner.  I'm thankful for his friendship and company and only wish we had more time together.  He always greeted me with a smile, kind word and genuine caring.  I also wish I could
be there for his memorial service and would like his family (especially Bettie)
to know that I will be there in spirit and my heart.  I'm sending you all lots

Gene was second dad (and Bettie a second mom) while my brother and I were quite young and our family had just immigrated to the US from the Netherlands. They were highly influental in our up-bringing and helped our whole family in feeling welcomed into a strange new world. The entire Coleman family has shown us kindness and love. Gene will be greatly missed. During this time of sorrow, our prayers, thoughts and love go out to Bettie, Mel and Jeannie. Gene, may you rest in God's Eternal Peace.

Gene (and all the Coleman's) was a dear friend of our family, and will always be remembered as one of the sincerest, kindest man that we've had the privilege to have known. He will be missed by all who knew him. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with Betty, Jeannie and Mel.

While we didnt know Eugene, we had the great pleasure every day of knowing, caring and loving his daughter Jeannie. We are praying for the Coleman family in this time of sorrow.
