I met Nicole while working at Dysinger, she was always smiling and I don't think I ever saw her in a bad mood. Later she went to Danbrook school to teach kindergarten. I will never forget the day I walked into her room in search of speech students. She was so happy to see me and welcomed me with the big smile she always carried. I was sorry to learn that she had left us, at the same time I was happy to know that she is now at peace. I am sure that when we join her  in that special place she will be waiting with her arms open and that big smile we all remember her by.

I became friends with Nicole years ago at Dysinger. Her giggle and laughter were so contagious. She drew people in with her zest for life. As I sit here now, I can vividly picture her with that beautiful smile and those bright eyes, giggling, like she was always up to something. We became much closer the last couple years she spent at Dysinger, confiding in each other often and sharing personal stories from home. It became apparent that we were similar in so many ways. We also shared a "need" for daily humor and sweets! I knew this was a developing friendship and that she would be one of those forever friends. Our friendship on Earth was not long enough, I will miss her everyday. She will, however, be forever etched in my heart as one of my friends that most touched my heart and soul.

I've procrastinated, struggling to put thoughts together when others have written so beautifully.  But I do want to honor Nicole's memory one more time.

I believe it was Feb. 2009 when I was first able to visit after Nicole's diagnosis.  I rode along on a trip to her physical therapy, heard of her progress, and learned of her exercises.  Barb, Marilyn, Nicole and I went to the park that week too.  While I relaxed, Marilyn and Nicole walked and walked, as she was so anxious to regain her strength, balance and coordination!  I knew I was literally watching her fight the disease, one step at a time. 

By the time I visited in Dec. 2010, she was weaker, but still fighting.   Chris, Barb had posted many times on Caring Bridge that you were amazing, and I saw that when I was there.   The love in your home was so clear!  You and Nicole loved each other so well, and inspired so many of us.  Megan and Lauren, she was so proud of you, and that week, pleased with the Christmas tree you'd decorated, and how you'd worked together doing it.  

It was a joy to know Nicole.  I pray your memories of  her love and the good times help you during the lonely times, as we look forward to all being together again one day.

When Nicole was 18 I was able to have her be my guest in Chicago for a week.  I had hoped that would be something I could do with each of my nieces and nephews, but as can happen as life "gets too busy", I was not able to give that same gift to each of my nieces and nephews. 

The week we had together was FUN, but also classic midwest hot and humid!!!  We couldn't comfortably stay in my un-air conditioned apartment, so if we weren't in museums, restaurants or movies during the day, we spent more time than needed in the car, which was air conditioned.... up and down Lake Michigan's shore, just to stay cool enough.  Thank goodness gas prices weren't like they are today!!

Nicole was my oldest niece, just 12 years younger than me.  The first few summers Barb and Jerry were married, they gave me a break from the often tumultuous, topsy-turvy home I shared with our mom, Grandma Kay and our step- father,Grandpa Larry. For a few summers I would leave Ohio for 5 or 6 weeks and go to Illinois, to spend time with Barb, Jerry and their growing family. Since Nicole was born in the summer, I was able to be there, to help out.  The first diapers I ever changed were Nicole's.  Those working holidays were precious to me!

Chris, Megan and Lauren, I hope you are often reminded of how INTENSELY Nicole loved each of you, and how hard she fought that Anaplastic Astrocytoma tumor, to be able to stay here longer, with you.  I have made a career in Medicine, so it should not surprise me when terminal illness hits so close to my heart....  although I mostly understand what happened physiologically in her illness, I continually felt I should have been able to do more... a lesson in humility for me.  Nicole was a warrior, for herself and for you, her precious family. She would have preferred to be healthy enough to stay longer, but I hope you can focus now on how FULL her life was with you all!! Megan and Lauren, gratefully your teacher-mom had enough time with you to share some study and work habits that will serve you well all your days!! When you have a question you'd like to ask her, or a life event you'd wish she could be there to share, I pray you DO feel her presence.... I have NO DOUBT her spirit is smiling on you ALL the time!!  I imagine her dancing with the angels, pain and worry free.... I believe LOVE never ends and that Nicole's life typifies the concept, it's not the number of years you live, but the QUALITY of life in those years.

I met Nicole when she moved to Danbrook.  Even though our time was short, it was enough to feel the impact and positive energy of Nicole.  Even with the chaos of changing schools and changing grades, she always had a smile.  That smile was still there during all the treatments and she came to visit during the end of the year tea for the district.  I will always remember her for her smile and positive attitude.  Thanks for always smiling Nicole!

I worked at Nicole's school site for one year with her.  She was such a beautiful person inside and out. I feel very fortunate to have known Nicole. In the short time I knew her, I saw a positive, happy, and strong woman.  I could see how loving she was by the way she showed pictures and bragged about her family.  I loved how enthusiastic she was about teaching, and I loved what she brought to our kindergarten team at Danbrook.  I feel very blessed for the short time I had with her.

The first time I saw Nicole she was 3 days old and ready to go home. I was at the same hospital where I had just delivered Karen Marie the night before.
I remember she always had a smile and loved playing with her brothers, sisters and cousins.
Meeting Chris I could see the love they had for each other. It was wonderful to see their love get stronger as they shared 20 years of marriage.
Megan and Lauren put a sparkle in her eyes and they became her main focus. They have become such loving and caring young ladies. 
It was great that all of you could come to Florida in 2002, helping to celebrate Caryl and Gary's Wedding. 
It was inspiring to hear the stories of how Nicki had influenced so many lives.
My hope for you Chris, Megan and Lauren is that you remember you have your wonderful memories with you. That you have family and friends who love you. We will be there if ever you need anything.

I hope you know how much you meant to me and my family. You were a loving sister and friend. You always had a glow about you when every I saw you and, I always looked forward to your hugs when our families got together.

I enjoyed our vacation together as families at the Lair, Vegas, Disney World and Tampa. The Beach Volleyball days were soo much fun and they were the highlight of my week to be with you and Chris.

Dear Waldeck Family,

I had the privilege of working with Nicole while I was at Dysinger.  I had a 2/3 combo. and Nicole had a straight third grade class.  Since I had never taught third grade before, she quickly helped me learn the ropes.  The thing I remember most about Nicole was the way she always talked about her family, especially her daughters (she was so proud! and still is..,).  She was an awesome teacher, and kind- hearted friend.  I know she will always be watching your family from heaven.

When she first began at Dysinger I remember her talking about her daughter who was just beginning the first grade! I was a first grade teacher at the time and Nicole's face would just shine as she spoke about her girls. Through the years I loved seeing pictures of her family...Nicole was a wonderful teacher, mother, wife, friend... we will all miss her very much."

My big sister, Nickie- 
  Boy am I going to miss you! I have always loved you dearly as my 2nd Mom, but in the past 10 years or so we became the best of friends. 
  I remember so many great times together but a couple stick out most in my mind. It semms like just yesterday that we sat in all those graduate courses together while I constantly complained about feeling nauseous with little Amanda in my tummy. Another vivid memory is sharing in the excitement of being teachers. Not so much because we loved working with the kids, but that indescribable joy we felt driving home from school on the first day of summer. It was my favorite moment of the year. One of us would call the other and we would simultaneously hoot and holler. It just won't be the same without you.
  I love you so much. I know I will continue to see you in Chris and especially in Megan and Lauren, who have over the years become known in the family as "the girls". I will still come to you when I need advice or a sounding board for all the ups and downs life brings my way.
  I trust in our Lord and am confient that we will be together again someday.

Nicky was an extremely warm and caring individual... An example of this can be shown in the fondest memory I have of her. When I was very young I remember being at Nicky and Chris's old house. I believe we had been at Sea World or some Aquarium for most of the day and I was pretty worn out that night. I remember being downstairs on their couch extremely tired, but I couldn't fall asleep because I had a migraine. My head was throbbing and I couldn't stop myself from crying because of how badly it hurt, but every time I'd let out even a whimper it was like someone was banging a hammer against my skull. I laid on the couch miserable and suffering when I saw Nicky appear and walk downstairs. She came over and sat on the couch next to me, she motioned for me to come to her so I did and put my head down on her lap. Once my head was down she began to slowly massage my head and stroke my hair very softly, at the same time continuously whispering to me "Shh... shh... shh." 

She did that for what must have been like an hour nonstop, until I was able to finally fall asleep. This is how I remember Nicky, as a loving and warm hearted nurturer. Words can't begin to describe how deep the pain is for myself, our family, and anyone else who was fortunate enough to have known Nicky. I loved Nicky with all my heart and soul and will think about and miss her every single day of my life. She serves as a muse for me in many ways, and every day that passes is a day closer until we all will get to see her again.

Remembrances of Nickie for Chris, Megan and Lauren:

     There was a fair amount of turmoil in Nickie's first weeks of life. Grandma Marthey had come to Bolingbrook to help with the new baby. The two of them had frequent disagreements about how often baby should eat. Baby wanted to breast feed all the time; grandma said,"No more than every 3 hours!" Eventually baby won, but she had learned to be a scrapper!
     Nickie began to walk when she was only 9 months old. She was hanging out with me while I set my hair one morning. In the mirror, I saw her walk away from the bed behind me and come laughing over to my leg.  From then on, she was a mover, too.
     As a toddler, she kept us on our toes. One day she found some baby mice spilling down the stairs from a closet in our farm-side home. She fearlessly picked one up and presented it to us.  Another day, she became distressed with baby Vince crying on the couch.  Hearing that he was hungry, she took charge. Next thing I new, he was sputtering -but not crying- from the mouth full of cheese she had given him.
     Nickie and I both had trouble keeping her lovely, fine blond hair neat. I liked it in braids and she let me. She was happy to wear the home-sewn outfits I made and never minded her St. Michael School uniform. She did really "not prefer" waiting in the winter for the bus in her skirt. Actually, she hated it! 
     When we moved to SanJose, she did 8th. grade and Confirmation at St.Frances Cabrini.  She was a cute new chick there and quite popular. Then on to Huntington Beach......
     Mater Dei kept promising they would find room for her there, but the day before school began she had still not been accepted. Thus began our family history at Marina. What a good sport she was! Jumped right in and, from not knowing anyone, made great friends. We are very proud of the positive attitude and responsibility she showed in those years. Along with usual college prep, she took woodshop, enjoyed Glee Club and tried out once for the flag squad.
     At 15, Nickie got her first job, at Der Weinerschnitzel. At 16, she was driving. Jobs at Philly Grille and LePeep followed. She must have been a good waitress; she bought her own clothes and gas. She was a great big sis and 2nd.mom. These were the years she was driving Pam to concerts but locking her out of her bedroom.
     Nicole always had to work hard in school. By high school she was diagnosed with dyslexia. Because she had learned to work so hard, she went on to GWC and Long Beach State. She was the only one of our kids to earn an educational honor: Golden Key Honor Society. During these years she met Chris and he was an inspiration to her hard work. 
    Their relationship put a glow on her face and a light to her path. I started working full time in the late '80s. She took a job with Premier Fastener out of college, but didn't feel safe as a lone woman sales rep. She went to work at Macro Pro then - what a "no-brainer!"
     While I was having my hips replaced the first time, she was out buying a wedding dress -her Cinderella dress- and picking out bridesmaid gowns. When she and Chris announced their wedding and followed up by making all the plans, we were delighted she had found her prince!
     The next 20 years are well-recorded. Two beautiful daughters, a Masters Degree and a teaching career later, we are awed by her final achievement..... She was couragous thru a brutal illness and beautiful in passing. As the first Periolat child to do so many things: walking, going to school, working, marrying......she leads the way also in death. My hope is that she has helped us understand that death will come for each of us, for each one we love, and we can be graceful in meeting it.
 
     She always gave her best.

My dear sweet niece Nicole will be dearly missed.  There was never a time we were together that Nicole didn't welcome me warmly and with that smile of hers, that laugh and her caring nature.  As the first of our family's 14 grandchildren, she held the #1 spot with grace, love, fun and spirit.  Although we lived miles apart, Nicole will always be close in my heart.

   We both adore and cherish Nicole and want to truly honor her as we reminisce on how important she has been to our family.  We have settled on three words which anchor our memories:  Breath, Heart, and Light.  
 Breath:  (1) Nicole (and Chris of course) gave birth and have raised two incredible daughters (Megan and Lauren).  We are so proud of them and feel comfort in the fact that they carry their Mom's spirit and are such shinning stars.   Both of them are such blessings to our family and our world. (2) We have so much admiration for Nicole because of her determination and perseverance to meet every health challenge.  She was so resilient.   She could be our teacher on how to meet life challenges with conviction and courage.  No matter what - she would always catch her breath and remained at the center of nurturing and care for her family, always outreached to meet the special needs of her students when teaching, and fully embraced all of her extended family, her friends.  Whether she had a headache or not, body aches and pains or not, or was dealing with the cancer she ALWAYS participated in the fullness of life from going to volleyball games, to the gym for workouts or family functions.  She has in a sense set the standard for the rest of us.

 Heart:  Nicole had so much life passion!  Her spirit touched all of us very deeply.  We could model our behavior off of her ability to show compassion and sensitivity to those around her.  We especially remember her wonderful sense of humor.   She could light up a room with her humor.  We often wondered if she even really realized how funny and creative she could be.

 Light:  Again, Nicole's very presence could light up the room and bring a warm embrace to everyone when we had a ground level view of her.  Now Nicole's spirit is soaring.  She is no longer constrained by a body that gave her grief.  She is free!    She now has a bird's eye view ON US particularly Chris, Megan and Lauren.  We feel that she is still with us, very tenderly watching over us.  We come today with open hearts to receive her touch from above and embrace her with all our love.

I met Nicole when I came into the Waldeck family and since then I been blessed sharing her friendship and love. Nicole easy going personality and love for people make me feel welcome and loved.
I wish things were different and maybe I'm selfish but I wish for Nicole to be here with us. Chris, Megan and Lauren: I love you very much guys and I'm very sorry for your loss but I want you to know that Nicole will always be part of my life and she will always have a special place in my heart.

I remember my brother Jerry running up the stairs of our house in the middle of the night, everyone then awake, boasting about his new baby daughter Nicole Marie,  saying how sweet she was, so beautiful, so dear. All still true. Living in the midwest, I was so grateful that my nieces and nephew spaced their weddings so that we could come out and see the family every two years or so! Nicole and Chris's wedding was the first of these wonderful occasions. The glow I saw in their faces that day, I would see again and again through the years. Their devotion is truly an inspiration to all. God bless them, their loving family, and all whose lives they touched.

You were an unbelievable inspiration to me and many others. I'm so honored to be a part of your family and you will never be forgotten.  You have done such an amazing job having such a beautiful family. May you continue to bless us with your grace from above.  I know we all have a new guardian angel looking over us.

My loving sister, Nickie, was also one of my dearest friends.  I will cherish the memories we made together throughout our childhood, teenage years and as adults.   In reflecting on these memories, I now realize what a significant influence Nickie has made on my life.   Because my older sister was always willing to take me under her wing, she helped me to become the woman I am today.  How blessed I have been to have her by my side my entire life.  I am thankful for the gift of Nickie in my life.  I believe one day we will be together again in the presence of God's love forever.

I arrived home around 11 PM from a week long business trip, when I got home you were still up waiting to talk to be. So we talked, you wanted me to know that you didn't want a dumb car for your birthday like a VW, I told you not to worry. When you turned 17,and still no car you told me a dumb VW would be ok, but it turned out to be a Tercel. My prayers are with you always. Love Dad

I can't even remember how Nickie and I became friends - I think I had just come home from up  north and her family had just moved to Huntington from San Jose, but our families had become friends over that time. We had some great times together when we were young, especially camping at Lost Valley and college days. We lost touch over the years, raising our families, but I have thought of Nickie often. I'm so sorry for your loss, Chris. I hope you and the girls can take comfort knowing she is walking with the Lord and looking over you.

I was blessed and honored to know Nicole; thank you Chris for sharing her with my family and I. Nicole was always warm and welcoming, ready with a big smile and a hug. My heart hurts for Chris and the girls, and Patty, all of whom I have always considered family, and who will always hold a special place in my heart.

I met you as my son's 3rd grade teacher. That was 7 years ago. I loved you as a teacher and as the sweet lady that continued to say hi and how are things going throughout the following years. You always had a smile and a kind word. You will be missed in this world. Hope to see you again in the next.

We first met Nicole when she was a beautiful energetic college student dating Chris. We were lucky to know her through different stages in her life, turning into a loving wife and superior mother. 
Nicole was a genuine lover of life. She was one of those rare people who  after spending time with her you always felt much better about life and yourself. Her special smile, everyone knows, was absolutely genuine, not a phoney bone in her body.
Nicole's smile, her wit and her gift of unconditional love will live in our hearts forever. She will be missed and never forgotten.

One of the greatest benefits of having Jerry as my boss back in the day was meeting and getting to know the entire Periolat family and watching their lives transpire.  Nicole was the first Periolat child I met years and years ago.  We worked together and I'll always remember Nicole with the brightest smile and the most positive attitude - ALWAYS.  Everyday we used to laugh at the daily drama that occured at the office.  She made it fun to come to the office. I know deep in my heart she's in the most beautiful place that will ever exist and it's only a matter of time before we all get to see her again.  Chris, Megan, and Lauren, I am so sorry for your loss.  You are in my prayers.

How can I forget that day when Nicole interviewed me at Macro-Pro w/ her sweetest smile. I already felt that day that she was so kind hearted. She always had that sweet smile on her face. Nicole I will never forget you and I thank you for everything coz if you did'nt give me that chance I might not be  where Iam now. And for Chris, I admire you for your strength your daughters will need that . Megan and Lauren , I know this is hard for both of you just always think that your mom is w/ the LORD and in PEACE .She will GUIDE you always. Sorry for your loss..

Nicole had a rare quality, she was a genuine person.  She had a way of making you feel welcome, included and at ease.  I have enjoyed the times I was able to visit with Nicole. I  will always remember her positive outlook and her loving attitude.  She was an incredible person, someone to be admired and emulated.  I am blessed to have known her.

Nicole I will alwways remember your smile and positive outlook on life, even during the gruiling class sessions while you earned your teaching credential. You were one of the happy faces I could always count on at Macro-Pro!

Nicole you were the smile that brighten each day at Macro-Pro when we worked together.  Always in a happy and upbeat mood, always looked at the positive side of things!  I can still hear your laughter!  
Nicole may you now rest in the hands of our loving God! 
To Chris and the Macro-Pro family, I am so sorry for the loss of Nicole, she was loved!  You're in my prayers....

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Your family and friends are in my prayers.

I love you, big sister.  I know you are in a better place watching over my just like you did when I was a kid.  I take comfort in knowing I see you every time I look at Megan, Lauren and Chris.

It seems like just a few years ago that Chris introduced me to this young college girl, who, it turned out, was even more loving, fun and kind than my first impression of her was.  I watched Nicole and Chris become caring, loving parents and a wonderful family.  A little piece of my heart is missing today, but I will always remember Nicole for her kind ways and quick smile.

I am so very sorry for you loss...God bless all of you...Altho, I did not know Nicole I have known Patty for many many years...I pray for all of you...god hold you tight and bless you all.
