

Velma Doreen Segeberg, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away on October 31, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on May 19, 1938, in Basswood, Manitoba, Canada, Velma grew up in a close-knit farming community, where she developed a lifelong love for nature and nurturing those around her.
Velma's academic journey began at Basswood Grade School and continued at Brandon Academy. In 1956, she enrolled in the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1959. Her nursing career took her to Bermuda, where she met the love of her life, Ed Segeberg. They married in Basswood in 1963, blending their families with Ed’s three children; Diane, Lina, and Eddie; and welcoming two more, Mark and Donna, into their lives.
Velma dedicated many years to her nursing profession before choosing to become a full-time mother, pouring her love and care into her children and home. She remained active in her community, fostering cherished friendships and staying connected with the Victoria Hospital Alumni.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ed, her father Frederick Porter, her mother Margaret Porter, and her sisters Lillian Coate and Vivian Crowston. Velma leaves behind her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will remember her kindness, strength, and unwavering love.
A chapel service to honor Velma's life will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at 9:30 AM at the Westminster Memorial Park Main Chapel, followed by a graveside service at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
Velma’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
