It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ethel Pearce. On Thursday August 13th at Tatagwa View, she slipped peacefully into the arms of our Lord at the age of 79. Ethel was pre-deceased by her husband of 48 ½ years, Douglas “Jack” Pearce, her parents, Clinton and Meta Reed, her in-laws, Annie and Wilfred Pearce, brothers, George and Ray, brother in-law, Ken Gibson and infant twin siblings. Left to mourn are her son, Darcy (Debbie) Pearce and grandkids, Keanu, Chloe, Reed and Gavin of Saskatoon, SK; daughter, Sharynne Pearce of Weyburn, SK; daughter, Danielle (Chuck) Shaw and grandkids, Micheala and Kendra of Regina, SK. She also leaves behind, Gisa Reed, Judy Reed and family; Michael (Jodi) Reed, Jeff (Stephanie) Reed and son, Kaelin, Michelle (Dean) Hazen and sons, Jayden and Quintin; sister-in-law, Julie Reed and family; Tracy Reed, Cindy Reed and kids Katie and Jacob; sister, Lois Gibson and family, Rhonda Gibson, Duane Gibson and kids Tyrell and Keylee; sister Patricia (Lorne) Straza and family, Tina Straza, Elizabeth (Jeff) Fehr and kids Grace and Samuel, and Tiffany (Tommy) Moore. Ethel was born and raised on the family farm north of Creelman, as the eldest of 5 children. She began school in Crieff until 1948 when she attended Sequin school with her siblings, and in her grade 10 year she and her siblings began school in Creelman, where she remained until she graduated in 1955. Following her graduation, Ethel attended teachers College in Moose Jaw, where she and Jack were introduced through mutual friends. Ethel began her teaching career at Meadow Brook School for one year before she and Jack were married in Creelman in 1957. They resided in Griffin while Ethel taught, before moving to Creelman where she would teach until 1963 when they built a new home in Ogema, that would be their family home. Ethel continued to teach in Ogema. In 1964 they had their first child and only son Darcy, followed by daughters, Sharynne in 1969 and Danielle in 1971. With the birth of her second child, Ethel took time off teaching to raise her family. In 1981, she resumed teaching Home Economics, and shortly after moved to the grade 2 classroom. In 1986, 30 years after her first year as a teacher, Ethel received her Bachelor of Elementary Education Degree. She continued to teach in Ogema until her retirement in 1994, having taught all grades from 1-12 in her career. In November 1999, Ethel and Jack sold the family home in Ogema and moved to a home they purchased in Weyburn, where Sharynne and Ethel would continue to live after Jack’s passing in 2006. Ethel enjoyed her retirement and filled her time with her various talents, quilting, crocheting/knitting, baking, canning and gardening to mention a few. Everyone loved the homemade gifts and treats that Ethel made with love. Ethel’s talents came second only to her grandkids. She was especially proud to have grandchildren. She had expressed many times that she had waited a long time and now finally she had the most grandchildren of all her siblings. She spent many hours devoted to helping them bake this or that, doing word searches at the kitchen table, weeding out in the garden with them or just getting in her fair share of snuggles. She took delight in watching them grow, and passing along her wisdom. In February 2015, Ethel’s health had begun to decline and she could no longer be at home on her own while Sharynne was at work. She was moved to Crocus Plains Villa. After an initial improvement, her health began to rapidly decline, calling for a move to Weyburn General Hospital for four weeks after which time she was moved to Tatagwa View until her passing. Ethel will be lovingly remembered by her family, friends and many generations of young minds and hearts that were blessed to encounter her as a teacher. A Memorial service was held on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. from Grace United Church in Weyburn, SK with Reverend Barnabas officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK. Those wishing to make donations in Ethel’s name may do so to a charity of their choice.
