Helen Eugenia Davidson, of Weyburn, died peacefully with close friends at her side on March 5, 2011 at the age of 102. She was predeceased by her parents, Clayton and Ethel Campbell, her brother, Irvine, sisters Madeline and Dorothy, her husband, William (Bill) Davidson, and niece Diane Campbell. She leaves to celebrate her life, her nephews, John Lacey of Black Diamond, AB and Gary Lacey of Hespeler, ON; great nephew, Chris (Alison) Campbell of Oakville, ON and great niece, Lisa Campbell of Toronto, ON.
Helen came to Weyburn as a young girl with her parents (of Scottish decent) from Ontario. She became the organist and choir leader at the Calvary Baptist in January of 1930 and held the position for 60 years. She taught piano lessons in the Weyburn and surrounding area for 70 years and was a 50-year member of the Registered Music Teachers’ Association. She took a very active part for many years with the Music Festival and was also the region’s representative for the Royal Conservatory of Music for over 25 years.
Helen’s involvement with music, teaching, organizations such as the Alexandria Rebekahs Lodge (lifetime member), the Quota International Club, and the Calvary Baptist Church helped her to touch the lives of so many people. Through her shared interests, she became a beloved friend to many. As a dedicated teacher who loved her students like her own children, she was not only proud of the students who did well, and who went on to become musical stars, but also of those who felt they had benefited from being her student. Her appreciation for music lives on through her students.
In 2008, in the year she turned 100, a local committee of friends and fellow music teachers formed a committee for the Helen Davidson Music Award. This award is a legacy that Helen leaves to help future local musicians pursue musical endeavours. As a teacher, this gave Helen great satisfaction to continue helping young musicians in years to come. Helen’s vast interests inspired her to give very generously to her church, her community and many causes and organizations—too many to mention—reaching beyond her interest in music and the arts.
Those who knew her will remember her with great fondness not only for her musical talent and her community endeavours but, also, for her quick wit and humour and her brilliant sharp mind which she was blessed with to the end. A Memorial Service of Music will be held for Helen at the Calvary Baptist Church on April 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Donations in memory of Helen may be made to The Saskatchewan Abilities Council, the Calvary Baptist Church, Weyburn or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapel Weyburn (306) 842-5432.
