Mary Jeanette was born in Weyburn, SK on March 8,1940 to proud parents John and Mary Vogel. Jeanette as she came to be called lived her early years on a farm near McTaggart, SK with Vern as an older sibling and Joan, Raymond, Rita and Peter following along soon after.
The family made the move of a lifetime when they relocated to what was to become the iconic Vogel farm south of Weyburn in October of 1947. Brothers Gordon and Victor soon joined the family and the farm became a hub of activity, grain farming and raising all kinds of animals, most especially cattle and horses.
Jeanette attended South Weyburn school and in later years the Weyburn Collegiate Institute. Daughter Mary was born in 1958,and life on the farm with all its ups and downs ensued.
In 1960,while on one of his first teaching stints in Outram, SK, Uncle Vern brought home a handsome young man named Sam Brokenshire to work on the farm and Jeanette was smitten. It took awhile and Jeanette moved in to Weyburn to work at the Telephone Office for a couple of years, but true love finally won out. They were married on July 28,1966,and daughters Roberta and Heather came along in 1967 and 1971. A good farm life was lived, with much travel in the girls’ early years as Sam pursued his love of harness horse racing. Sadly, Sam passed away in 1988,and Jeanette and Heather moved into Weyburn, where their apartment(and later their house)was a gathering place for many family members and friends. A couple of extra mouths to feed when it was suppertime and nobody wanted to go home yet? No problem, Jeanette would add a bit of this and that and get out the extra loaf of bread and block of cheese and no one ever went hungry.
Jeanette loved music, especially that of Don Williams and Charley Pride. Her Ipad always had music going. She attended all the live music events at Tatagwa View(where she resided since 2014) and was known to sing along at all of them. She also played a mean accordion, though it took some doing to get her to play.
Jeanette loved her friends and caregivers at Tatagwa View. She was always up for a hug and was a surrogate Mom or Grandma to many. She attended as many activities as she could and enjoyed all of them, with the remainder of her time spent on her Ipad, doing word find puzzles and visiting with anyone who had the time.
Jeanette was a deeply spiritual person. She was not necessarily public about it,but her relationship with God was very important to her and she tried her best to show it in her words and actions. She sent out a lot of prayers for a lot of people every day and was very upset the day her rosary disappeared(it was eventually recovered, thank God!).
Mostly though, Jeanette loved her family. She doted on her daughters and talked with them nearly every day. She was a good sister to her siblings, she Facetimed her sisters in Regina a few times a week, and those siblings that she did not hear from or see as often were in her thoughts and prayers daily. She often talked about her nieces and nephews as well, and when I would visit, we would hit the Ipad and see what everyone was up to. She was a kind and gentle soul, and seemed to truly love everyone and everyone seemed to truly love her right back! She will be missed terribly and remembered fondly by countless relatives and friends from near and far.
