

Samuel Thomas Hewitt passed away on February 5, 2012 at the age of 93. Sam and his twin sister Eunice were born to John & Harriet Hewitt, July 24, 1918, on the homestead at Tribune, Saskatchewan. He attended school at Tribune until close to end of the 9th grade, at which time he had to quit so he could help out with the cattle on the family farm. When World War II started Sam went to Regina and enlisted. He was a Signalman and a gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery in the 15th Canadian Field Regiment. Sam spent 4 ½ years with the armed forces and saw active duty in the British Isles, landing at the beach, code named Juno, in the Normandy Invasion, continued on into France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After the war Sam enrolled in a nursing program at the Saskatchewan Mental Hospital in Weyburn, where he met his wife, Lydia Schafer, who was also a student in the same program. They were married on May 8, 1948, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Weyburn. He finished the nursing program at the Saskatchewan Mental Hospital, graduated as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse and continued to work there for 37 years. He continued to improve his education in nursing by taking courses, including the one for St. John’s Ambulance. Sam enjoyed carpentry, gardening and landscaping, golfing, activities at the cottage and watching and listening to hockey games. He taught many courses for St. John’s Ambulance through the years and volunteered for hockey games, fair days and many other community events with St. John’s Ambulance. He belonged to St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church and attended regularly, often doing the duty of an usher at mass. He joined the Knights of Columbus and assisted at and attended their functions as well as other church functions where and whenever he could. There were many special events throughout his life, celebrating his 25th, 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries and becoming a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. As a Knight he went to Ottawa where he was awarded the Serving Brother Award for his service with St. John’s Ambulance by Governor General Schreyer. Sam and his wife, Lydia, lived and raised their family in Weyburn, SK. They took many trips throughout Canada, the United States and abroad, including a trip of Remembrance with the Legion that followed his army service through England, Wales, Scotland and Europe. Sam enjoyed life. Every day was a treasure and his uplifted spirit will live on within us all. Sam was predeceased by his parents, John and Harriet Hewitt; his twin sister, Eunice and brothers and sisters, Marjorie, Ernest, Harold, Norman, Annie, Frank and John. Sam will be remembered by his wife of 63 years, Lydia of Weyburn, SK; son, Richard (Judy) and their family, Chris, Kevin (Andrea) great granddaughters, Brooklyn and Skyra and Janet (James); son, David and his children, Jason (Rika) great grandson, Leo, Joe (Rachel) and Samantha; daughter, Diane; son, Curtis (Dodie) and his children, Amanda, Christina, Bradley, stepchildren, Melanie and Nick; daughter, Carol (Gerard) and their children, Matthew and Andrew; sisters, Clara, Mabel and Hilda; sisters-in-law, Rose and Theresa as well as many nieces and nephews. Prayers were said on February 9, 2012 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 10:00 AM from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Gerry Bauche celebrating. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK. Active Pallbearers were Rick Hewitt, David Hewitt, Curtis Hewitt, Dwayne Schultz, Owen Hewitt and Joel Hewitt.
